So You Want To Be A Writer

if it doesn't come bursting out of you
in spite of everything,
don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
and your gut,
don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
staring at your computer screen
or hunched over your
typewriter
searching for words,
don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
fame,
don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
women in your bed,
don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
rewrite it again and again,
don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
else,
forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of
you,
then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
do something else.

if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
you're not ready.

don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
love.
the libraries of the world have
yawned themselves to
sleep
over your kind.
don't add to that.
don't do it.
unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don't do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.

Laketearofclouds - damn skippy! don't know about the rewriting part but I agree that it should "...come out of your soul like a rocket..."

MKD2020 - Class, wonderful ease of flow and common sense written from the bottle with that internal voice questioning why do it, just do it, can't stop it... Inspiring, humbling and a passage of rights for the aspirations of wannabe wordsmiths.

Clever write

Saplingpower87 - The words can come from anywhere and everywhere. They can dribble into your brain like rain. Or they can explode into you like a rifle shot. And if they don't do any of those things, then hang it up for awhile and go have a beer.

Jyotsana Lalotra - So honest. Writing cannot be forced. Often words are the only escape I have and I spill them onto the paper although the courage to present whatever I have is still to be achieved.

- I think this is the first poem I ever read seriously. "Sifting Through the Madness for the Word, the Line, the Way" definitely had an impact on me.

everyone1 - What is riveting, what is piously full and truthful, what is beholden to the blessing of the gentle age of regret, is the hope of the handy, the free.

Welcome love, show this, allowing it to make you this way, is all that the surrender of life is all meant to be all of the rages about!

Etch your thoughts upon the shy sky, kiss the wind, breathe in the Sun just before the welcome of this leaves you for the night.

Walk hand in hand with your hands, swaying them back and forth, circling them round and round then throwing Rocky and Creed and Mr. T and Russian Punches under the Moonshine!

Go straight out and run down a chicken until you catch it, and; for goodness sake, be everything that God has created you to be!

Yes, be yourself, for what good is being anything or anyone else?

Yes, and for God sakes, keep on breathing, until your heart and mind slip away and your feet are worn and your days are full, and God retires you for the moment.

You will rest in Heaven, again friend yes again in the meantime, just like you were as mere like, like a little baby angel, quiet and quite tenderly, simply, sleeping! Clever write.

I don't really consider myself a writer, even though I have stories that I'd like to share one day, but reading this poem made me realize that this applies to artists as well. Many a time I've sketched or doodled trying to find some inspiration and failed. The best pieces I've done were the ones where my muse suddenly hit me on the head with a hammer nonstop until I completed the piece hours later...or quit due to massive a head ache. Patience really is a virtue. Art is my passion, even if I have to wait long periods for my own roar. I'm so glad my writer friend shared this link with me. <3

I really like this poem because it speaks the truth. If you have to wait and wait and ASK people if ur writing is good then why do you write? Dont go and ask people if the way you write is good..YOU have to believe it and u have to let the insperation COME TO YOU on its own...^^ Thats what i do...

Everyone writes differently. Burowski is simply arrogant enough to think his way superior. You should write with passion but not within any kind of boundaries. Sometimes staring at a computer screen for hours is the only way to nuance what you feel. Sometimes you want someone so badly that all you can do is write about it. Sometimes it just flows onto the page but you shouldn't avoid writing because you lack inspiration at the time. You should capture it so the future will share what you felt, so your thoughts don't die with your body.

strongly worded. and it speaks the truth. I think that is the best advise somebody can give an aspiring writter and though it may seem harsh; "there is no other way. and there never was."

Oh my, that is soooo true. Every bit of it. It hits all the nails on the head. The meaning behind that advice is to having the passion. Something you would do for free if someone asked you, and you'd have a hard time not being interested, even if you had no time to do it! Good PoiNts!

The writer is either too much of a romantic, too much of a megalomanic or...
too much of an idiot

dave ochs - if you were repulsed by this poem as in many of the comments indicate chances are its because you aren't a writer, you havent' been "called" so to speak, and altough you want to be a writer and sweat on your computer with your dictionary and thersurus, and churn out boring verse. Sorry about that, the truth hurts.

Hehe Mr. Bukowski was the consummate kidder. So take what he says with the actual intent. This poem is supposed to make you take measure of your strength and belief in your own writing. If you let this poem bully you into walking away from what you love then how much do you love it anyhow? Whatever your reason for writing may be. Don't let this "old fart" (hehe and I say this with all the love for Chuck) not to dissuade you from it. The poet is making you think about your own writing. This is a good thing. With love and regards, Ahmed. P.S. Mr. Bukowski was and always will be an amazing writer and a fantastic teacher (if you don't let him push you around)
