Vox et praeterea nihilShow poetry

sometimes it MAY NOT BE
beautiful (eyelashes drowning
in new orleans cemetaries) sometimes
it MAY NOT BE
rational (the only
path that leads into the woods
also leads out) sometimes it
MAY NOT BE
clever (the pristine cunning of this old
snaggletooth lush springs mighty)
but

sometimes
i like Signifying Nothing.

recently a fresh young poet on this page became agitated when i questioned the artistic integrity of his contest.  he blessed me with a poem.  as it's an honor to have someone so talented, a real up-and-comer, write a poem for and about you, i thought i'd share it.  it sums things up nicely.

\All this says to me is I'm a boozer.
Vox et, a lyrical loser.
He couldn't make two words rhyme.
Even if he was given 20 minutes of my time.
So I'm crashing his addline.
This thing is corny anyway, so here's mine.
Fuck, fuck fuck, what now Vox.
You're mad because I'm taking shots?
Well you deserve every bit.
So cm'on bitch, suck my dick!\

with a post-script comment of

\pussy!\

what can i say?  thanks, man, for sharing.  keep monkeying that typewriter and you're bound to hit gold.

Okay, enough mildly patronizing notes from me (I think this is what Canadians do, be mildy patronizing and hope some larger power won't kick our ass for the Alberta tar sands). I hope school is going well (I've got no job this year but a thesis and a boyfriend, which take up possibly more time). AND I do now see the occaional support our troops bumper sticker (*why* always on minivans or SUVs? - there's a study waiting to happen) on and around the campus. If only I felt better about peace-keeping.

Just got back again from your homeland, this time driving through N Dakota, Montana and Wymoning to Yellowstone for some fun research. So the midwest is quite the experience, and I learned from students at Arizona State U that if I say your home state "Ore - a - gone" I'll be laughed at and should in fact say "Ore -ag - in". Right. Makes perfect sense. Yellowstone is that awesome combination of spectacular geology and wildlife and a lot of huge tourist stuff. More keychains than could feed some African countries. Saw a fantastically interesting mix of people, who seem to either wear matching shirts (if they're a couple) saying "God bless America" or "Land of the free, home of the brave; support our troups" or "Jon Stewart for President, 2008". (Yes, you can assume my bias lies toward the latter.) Driving back through Wisconsin to Michigan, found the radio very strange, with all those public service announcements, as if the flip side of all that freedom is telling your kids to avoid drugs, booze, and cigarettes, and telling parents to meet their kids' teachers and monitor them so they don't do drugs. Also felt sorry for NPR, which is about in line with TVO (Ontario's public tv) and much less sophisticated than CBC (which the government throws enough money at that there are no ads on CBC radio, just promos for other CBC shows) and doesn't appear to have national coverage, as it kept fuzzing out somewhere in Montana.

Anyway, we all felt a bit of relief, a bit more free, when we crossed back at Sarnia last night. I wonder what you'd think of Canada. Patriotic shirts, flags, and anything involving "support the troops" or "jesus" (or both) are hardly in evidence. I'm sure it would be a certain amount of culture shock. Y'all have some fantastic scenary, though.
