I hardly write now--what I do write are like so many drops of water I can salvage from a desert of time. But it is important to write, because to do so is to stop living like an automaton, and that seems to me to be among life's worst fates. To stop and listen to our minds, and put these rumours on a page: that is a rare pleasure.
