tragedienne on June 24, 2006Hi Morgan! Thanks for your kindness. Your advice is good, I might try that some time. The block was back in May though, I'm fine now. I'm not one of the hyper-productive authors that write a new poem every day. Not that it's anything wrong with that, it's just not my style.
You said that "the conscious mind's writing tends to be slow, frustrating, and often forced." I agree 100%! That's why I never try to write like that, I only write when I get that certain feeling (that I'm sure you're familiar with). Of course it means that sometimes it may take months before I write a single poem but I can't force it - and neither do I feel blocked! The block is what I experience when I really feel the need to write something but when I sit down to do it the words won't come out. Usually that happens because somewhere in the back of my mind something's telling me that they wouldn't suffice anyway. It's connected to intense emotion - if you read my poetry, you'll find it's filled with it. But my best pieces were written after I've had the chance to "sleep on it" a little. For some odd reason, I need some distance to sound emotional. Those poems also take a long time to write because it's like tearing pieces of my soul out and that can't be done quickly. So indeed my most honest writes are the slow ones. My only quick writes are the humorous ones. It's interesting how different people's styles are, isn't it?
Thank you for your kind advice and for stopping by. I'll go read some of your poetry as soon as I can.
Have a lovely day! -
JustBe on June 24, 2006Are you, as I saw above, going through a block? It's very easy to think too much. You might be trying too hard. The conscious mind's writing tends to be slow, frustrating, and often forced. It can turn out good work, but it can also prevent it, I have learned recently. The subconscious--which is really in charge, anyway--is quicker-witted, more creative, and virtually never suffers a block. Try this: Set an alarm clock for 30 minutes, and then just start writing. Anything and everything that pops into your head, write it down--no crossing out, no editing (you can come back later,) and don't stop to think, if you can help it. I've found that those last, hurried lines are often the best ones, too. I wasn't a believer until my last 5 poems were received at least as well as any of my previous efforts (some of which took me more than a month of concerted effort and redrafting). All of my 5 "fast" poems were written this way--45 minures was the longest, and that's just because the poem itself was long. Some of the lines that come out will not appeal to you later, but that's why you have a conscious mind--editing, which you may find is less necessary. Afterall, emotion, insight, and creativity are not conscious processes. Try to finish before the alarm goes off. You be shocked at the quality of what you come away with. People seem to use the word "honest" a lot when they discribe what I have written this way. Maybe you've tried this already, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

C.W. Bush on June 13, 2006Just wanted to thank you. I hadn't been very active lately here of late - but getting some praise and criticism from a new (and talented) poet has inspired me to write more often.
