The bridge also may have a different chord sturcture from the song, given it a distintive feel from the rest of the song.

I love the bridge but you don't need them for a song, although it can help take the burden away from the verse.. and the overwhleming chorus!

This is a song by Aerosmith, from their 2001 album "Just push play" herein is a good example of how a bridge generally does, or how it is used. He sums up his frustration.

Your first line there "i got lost along the way..."
reminds me of an old Dr Hook song...that had the hook line
of "I got stoned and I missed it" where he sings about being
high so much he missed everything going on in life.
We don't need to be high to miss life tho, only discouraged
with our current situation, for then it makes us focus internally on how it affects us instead of focusing outward on all the other things going on in the world.
