ooooooooh. your page is changing! i had no idea the text was too dark. perhaps it varies from screen to screen? you ARE the second person to mention it, so perhaps i'll get around to changing it. as for the pic... well, some of my mother's relatives found the page and at the time i had a "me kissing banana" jesting picture up. i took it down real quick like to save face, you know? just haven't replaced it. when i have time i'll get around to putting up something.

i've just been bogged down with baby preparation and school researching for the boys (our public system here is TERRIBLE). not to mention the regular list of pregnancy maladies (sp?). hmmmm. have you thought any more about the military? just curious.

    hope all is well.
  • stephanie sunshine on January 13, 2004

I am still pondering what i should do to finish it up, but as of now i havent been very inspired to do much with it. Thank you again.
    with love,

Oooh, thanks for the comment on 'real people'! I love killing time with armchair philosophy, yay. Now to discuss what you said...

First off, that author's note thingamajig was an intentionally schizophrenic ramble. What I wrote there was an essentially solipsistic view of the world (or at least the Internet), which would be, in my view, rather dangerous to actually believe in. Rest assured I'm not *that* crazy. :-) Oh, and my name is Ian; ignore the Brian.

As for the poem, I wrote it because I find Internet societies both interesting and disturbing. You look at people around here and elsewhere, they try to make little communities, complete with shared personal details, in-jokes, cliquishness, and petty arguing. It seems to be that people want desperately to make societies here feel real without taking into account the factors that are inherently missing online, like, as you said, simple things like facial expressions. Because of this, if you want to be accepted, you're forced to modify yourself to make up for what you can't show. That's all fine and dandy if you want to put on the mask, but difficult if you just want to be yourself. Because I don't really care about having a virtual world to escape into, I don't try to be anyone but myself when I'm online. But people don't seem to expect this; most seem to expect people who are extra-careful to present an unrealistic image of themselves. And since no one is really 'real' anyway (and you can always leave the community whenever you want), people feel free to get hypercritical, argumentative, and generally lacking self-control. It's the strangest thing, and I (usually) don't see it when talking to my friends online - you know they're real, so you act like a civilised human being. That bugs me, because it seems to just enhance the feeling that you're not writing to actual human beings, albeit thousands of miles away. I guess I just want to be real to other people as myself. That would also include being introverted, which doesn't seem to gel well with online behaviour, as people who don't socialise pretty much get ignored because there's no physical presence to give you a reminder. Like one big popularity contest it is here to get reads, grrr. Anyhow, end rant.

Oh, and your poetry is good, but I didn't comment because I don't like just saying 'I liked it' but I know people around here are usually touchy about criticism. A soothing voice makes it so much easier.

Anyhow, I'm probably boring you to death here, blah blah blah. I'll just say it shows how much your insight was appreciated. :-)

    the boys are...
    wonderful and difficult, simultaneously.
the older is potty training and it's not going well at ALL. quite completely the opposite in fact. the younger turns two in one month and i think he's entered that famed 'stage' of toddler rebellion. he's not sleeping properly and it throws us all off. the other night, i put him to bed and an hour later, he was still tooling around in his room. i started walking down the hall to put him back into his bed, when i saw his little hand drape over the gate in his doorway and drop a diaper on the ground. there happened to be, next to the diaper, his brother's FAVORITE stuffed animal. as i approached ever nearer, i was just in time to watch the near-two-yearer piss through the gate ONTO the animal. argh! the things they do, eh?!
    hope all is well.

Thankyou so much for your comments on my poem and I agree that the last line is a bit of an anti climax but I couldn't really think of how to make it better at the time any suggestions would be welcome.

I will read some of your stuff when I have time
