For you and for Rob
"Poets to come! orators, singers, musicians to come!
Not to-day is to justify me, and answer what I am for;
But you, a new brood, native, athletic, continental, greater than before known,
Arouse! Arouse—for you must justify me—you must answer.
I myself but write one or two indicative words for the future,
I but advance a moment, only to wheel and hurry back in the darkness.
I am a man who, sauntering along, without fully stopping, turns a casual look upon you, and then averts his face,
Leaving it to you to prove and define it,
Expecting the main things from you."
~ Walt Whitman (1819–1892), from "Leaves of Grass", 1900

Late Prayer
by Jane Hirshfield
Tenderness does not choose its own uses.
It goes out to everything equally,
circling rabbit and hawk.
Look: in the iron bucket,
a single nail, a single ruby -
all the heavens and hells.
They rattle in the heart and make one sound.
-
I slowly discover those from my homeland....Most interested to know where you are from ....and I will be reading your work...

"If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there
is a cloud floating in this sheet of paper.
Without a cloud there will be no water; without water,
the trees cannot grow; and without trees, you cannot make paper.
So the cloud is in here. The existence of this page
is dependent upon the existence of a cloud. Paper
and cloud are so close."
~ Thich Nhat Hahn, in "Engaged Buddhism"

I Think Continually Of Those Who Were Truly Great
by Stephen Spender
I think continually of those who were truly great.
Who, from the womb, remembered the soul's history
Through corridors of light where the hours are suns
Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition
Was that their lips, still touched with fire,
Should tell of the Spirit clothed from head to foot in song.
And who hoarded from the Spring branches
The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.
What is precious is never to forget
The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs
Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.
Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light
Nor its grave evening demand for love.
Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother
With noise and fog the flowering of the spirit.
Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields
See how these names are fisted by the waving grass
And by the streamers of white cloud
And whispers of wind in the listening sky.
The names of those who in their lives fought for life
Who wore at their hearts the fire's center.
Born of the sun they traveled a short while towards the sun,
And left the vivid air signed with their honor.

When I need medicine that is not found in the pharmacy, I read your books. Your verses of hope are a balm for my scars, your endictments of the obscene, the ammunition for my own earnest angst.

well, as you find time to reflect, did you ever think you would ever get this old. . .my fifty-nine is coming up in September and it boggles my mind, i'll tell you. well enough of this drivel - on to the blessing! May your heart find vast horizons of image and metaphor where dreams are born and never die but go on and on birthing themselves into starry nebulas of hope and promise. May all your words find their truest homes, within the hearts of readers who love to read your work.
blessings and best wishes,
~richard~
