How do you know that you cannot become a full-time writer? Or, rather, make your living by writing? (Which is what I suppose you meant - for it should be easy enough to make "English" as a career... by teaching it!)

When I was seven years old, my class-teacher (a retired journalist, who had gone into teaching during World War II, to release someone younger for the forces), told me that whatever career I chose, I should also train as a writer, so that, whatever happened, I would always have "something safe to fall back on!" I did not really relish that prospect... but I did as she said... began selling my work at 15, and since leaving university in 1961 have supported myself, my late mother in her last years, occasional indigent students and a poetry magazine, entirely on my earnings as a writer... And this, in spite of having during the 1960s been virtually crippled with asthma (luckily it eventually yielded to the new steroids.)

But "writing poetry on-line", although pleasant, will not -even in the early 21st century - be sufficient for a writing career. You need to be sending out your manuscripts to the editors of what is still the "real world" of publishing - the print media.

    Good luck with it.

"I love literature, english and writing! i wish i could make it my career, but i am realistic enough to know i cant."

BALONEY!!! You can do what you want as long as you have breath! Who has brainwashed you into thinking that you can't do something you want to?! Shame on them! If you REALLY have a passion for English, pursue it, hound it, chase it, dream it, LIVE IT! You will find kindred souls on your journey; you will rub elbows with people who see you're ON FIRE about your chosen career; you'll find people who will want to give you an opportunity because they will see the need to pass the torch to someone young and with enthusiasm! YOU GO GIRL!!!

Thanks for your kind comments on my poetry. They didn't go without notice. I read what you have written on your page on this site and I want to thank you for those inspirational words as well. I went through a rough time just a few weeks ago and when I read that you "wouldn't trade any of the pain because it all led up to this point- and it has made me who I am today", it really inspired me and made me think. Thanks again.
