Glacian on January 24, 2006I hope you don't mind my stopping by your page, but I saw some of your quotes and wanted to leave a few comments.
I'll start with this one:
"If there was no God, there would be no atheists."
This statement is patently absurd. It is also not necessarily true. It simply does not follow that if there were no god, that there would be no atheists.
I think we both agree that there are no unicorns. Does that mean that there are no people who do not believe in unicorns?
I have seen this quote several times and it never ceases to amaze me how absurd of a remark it is, and what amazes me even more is why people like it. It almost seems as if they have some sort of misconception about atheists, or will dredge up even the most intellectually bereft remark about atheism just because it's the only one they have to fling at it. Please, please, for the love of God, explain to me what is so great about this quote, or do us both a favor, find a better quote against atheists, put that here, and remove this one.
I'm also reminded of a useful "counter" to this one, not that any counter is even needed since it's logically absurd and completely indefensible in the first place:
"If God didn't exist, it'd be necessary to invent him."
"Nobody talks so constantly about God as those who insist there is no God."
This is a much better statement about atheists since it encapsulates, at least, a partial truth. The thing is, it's the very people who vocalize their opinion that there is no god that you identify with those who insist there is no God. In all likelihood, there are dozens of atheists all over the place who *simply don't care*, and while, to me, they'd insist God didn't exist if I insisted he did, they otherwise never seek out people to insist there is no god to and only discuss it when provoked or backed into a corner.
As a matter of fact, from personal experience, this [my comment, not your quote]describes the majority of atheists that I know. Through the process of induction, I would surmise that some, if not most atheists do not fit the description of this quote - that they speak more of god than the typical/average believer.
However, it is true that some of us do.
Now, supposing, for a moment, that this is true, that those who insist there is no God speak of God constantly, what impliciations do you draw from that? So what if I talk about God constantly? Does that imply that I secretly really believe, or something? I mean seriously, what is this quote getting at? Certainly it's intending to imply a little more than a mere observation. Please explain.
"Liberty means responsibility. That is why men dread it."
---Now that one I like.
Just a quick comment before I head out - it would be cool if you could credit these quotes. I know that when I find neat quotes I haven't heard before, I'm usually curious about who said them. Anyway, see you later, and you're welcome to comment on my author page or IM me or whatever whenever you want. -
