Print a number of your favorite poems in a book format (Microsoft Word has such a feature), print them, and them make photo-copies and staple them at a copy store. Get a techno-savy friend to help you.

    Anna marie,
I love your user name. As a teenager, I sang folk songs and one was "Ananaisis" I never knew the meaning ( I was young) but I sang it so soulfully. Ot was first recorded by Odetta, am American Indian, and it was the song I always got the greatest applause. Now I know why!

    Wonderful person,wonderful heritage!

thank you for the love, although my mum and I whilst we are hopeful he will be ok, we know that there is a strong possibilty that he won't get better, as he is already terminally ill anyway and our doctor told us that he doesn't have too long left only last week. I would take the day off, but there is so much work we're doing in class that is not easy to catch up with, my computer is already broken at home atm, so I can't catch up at home. :S life is so complicated for me atm xx

Another poem to analyze. Remember, don't read it, SEE IT.

Also, a quote to consider: "Poetry is not a hobby, it's a force."-Bob Holman

    Keep that quote in mind.

No Soup Kitchens For Starving Artists
    By Kim Johnson

There have never been soup kitchens for starving
    artists,
    Musicians are doctors without borders,
And when a writer dies, it is so quiet, you can hear
    their pen drop.

Tonight I've got a fat lady locked in a music box,
And there is a cypher going on at the corner of 24th
    and Mission,
That reminds me of the purity of music and poetry.

This city is built on distractions,
She doesn't owe anyone her attention.
I see your fresh faces as a pumpkin patch,
My pen has yet to cave expressions in.
And I would jump through hoop ear rings to get you to
    listen.

So I step out of the crowd,
Become a shadow puppet under the streetlight,
Stare up into the heavens as they unfold into a fan of
    peacock feathers,
Creating just enough breeze for these paper crane
    notebook pages,
To float off my tongue in the thousands.

In a world that aborts webbed fetuses, I've survived
    in the womb of surrealists.
Today I'm taking all the dreamers on a field trip to
    the unicorn farm.

What if I told you that a siamese twins dying wish,
Is to have a zipper tattooed on his skin,
And that I only shoot myself in the foot when I wear
    bunny slippers?

That passion is running out of glue and busting a nut
    on your project
Because you can't wait to finish.
That both art and orgasms can be out of body
    experiences?

If you paddle out far enough,
You can seen the reflections of gods in the earths
    punchbowl.
And it's the closest I've ever come to walking on
    water.

Even when it's low tide and tough to couch surf,
I've pounded toenails into the pavement,
To hang air fresheners in armpit towns,
And watch cactuses embrace their 5 o'clock shadow.

I've followed the holes in my heart to the other side
    of the world.
Remember, even when life is rabbit with a missing
    foot,
This earth, is still a Dalmatian in the realm of
    beauty marks.

We are a generation of skunks who have been baptized
    in tomato juice,
And it is time to reclaim our essence.
This will be a night of sangria and Santeria.
A moment where your finger can door belly dance
    In anticipation of what's possible.

Musicians have always been doctors without borders.
Pick up a seashell off the beach in Florida,
And you can hear the soft whaling of trumpet in
    Havana.
Press your ear to an MC's chest ,
And you can hear their heart beatboxing.

I've felt like Linus all these years
Holding Jimi Hendrix like an electric blanket.
Knowing that inside out headphones can become
    Megaphones.
Tonight we are two peas in an iPod taking in the
    city from this rooftop.
Using mix CDs to teach collages to teach collages the
    blind.

I was born in a quicksand box,
With a penny jar for my thoughts,
And taught that the heart is a two way mirror to
    freedom.

So if you're going to hang an artist to a cross,
Don't bother to give them tetanus shots,
Because I've seen archers, disguised as martyrs,
Shoot down strange fruit from heavens orchards,
And know that when my ancestors passed,
They weighed their hearts against a feathered head
    dress.

There have never been soup kitchens for starving
    artists,
Because hunger is what drives us.

Tonight I prey to the Salvador Dalai Lama to release
    the chains of writer's block,
So I can write a poem that's going to levitate us all
    off this street corner.
Because when I die, I want it to be so quiet,
That you will hear my pen...
    Drop!

After browsing through your work, I have seen much improvement. However, I wonder(and I say this with with no malice), if you took my advice reading the poets I told you check out. If not, I drastically re-iterate that you put the follwoing names into a search on google, MySpace, wikipedia, YouTube, et cetera:

    Rachel McKibbens

Buddy Wakefield (go to www.buddywakefield.com and skim the entries in his journal)

    Jeffery McDaniel

The allpoetry poet whose address is www.allpoetry.com/poets/sleepysmile3

    and lastly, Bucky Sinister.

In general, I want you to remember this:

In the game of show and tell, showing is the poets' game. Leaving storytelling to storytellers.

Try to stay away from common-place/cliche words like "pain" or "soul," and attempt to use more adjectives in your description. You can be pained by a pinprick and a nuclear bomb. The key is to make sure your readers know the difference.

For instance, saying "When I was born, I gave my mother's body a lot of trouble" is far different than "I came out of my mother like a dancing bullet" (a line by New York poet Aja Monet).

Note the imagery. Note the action. Note the sentence structure: "I came out [action verb] of my mother like a dancing [adjective] bullet [noun]" Try to get more "[adjective] [nouns]."

When you read more McKibbens, Wakefield, et cetera (or re-read, as the case may be), read each poem five times and dissect what you like about each lines. Ask yourself, "Why do I like this line/image/word use, et cetera?" Once you've figured out why you like it, STEAL THE TECHNIQUE AND USE IT FOREVER. (Note caps.)The same goes with writers of novels, memoirs, et cetera. THE MORE YOU READ THE MORE TECHNIQUES YOU CAN STEAL. Even if you don't like an author/poet's work, MAKE NOTE OF WHAT THEY DO THAT DISAGREES WITH YOU, AND AVOID THAT TECHNIQUE.

Only after understanding the techniques of your peers, can you adapt their ideas and tweek them into your own style.

As an exercise, I want you to read the poem "The Beautiful Ones" on this site, which you can find through http://allpoetry.com/NonaLeona

Note how the author NEVER says "I was scared and sad," she instead presents the situation and her reactions to it. Only a cold-hearted monster would not realize that "This is sad poem." But you know what? NEVER does the author say "This situation was sad" or "I was sad." Why? Because the situation speaks for itself; that is, she SHOWS INSTEAD OF TELLS.

Criticism notwithstanding, keep up the good work.

Remember, every poem you read, read it five times.

The best way to familiarize yourself with foreign terms ("chip-wich") is to look them up in a google or wikipedia search. Always strive to learn. The more you learn/know, the more you give yourself to write about.

I'm giving you a few assignments: 1) I want you to write a image-heavy persona poem and 2) I want you to research poem forms (pantoum, sestina, and sonnet are good starters) and 3)I want you to research the history of poetry slam and tell me about a slam poet that you found whose work you really liked, and why their work appealed to you.

Take as long as you like. My intent is that this will lead you to other work that will inspire you.

But still, make sure you read the work of poets I suggested in the previous message.

    -Curtis
  • K-Dense on August 27, 2007
    1) ALWAYS copyright your work. The easiest way to do this is to type work in Microsoft Word. Put a Capital C between an open and closed parenthesis, (that is, a (, and a ) ), and the program will format it for you. This may not be an official copyright, but it impresses potential publishers and dissuades others online from stealign your work.

    2) Don't ever wait for publishers. Self-publish your own work in a chapbook (paperback) format. The simplist way to do this is to type up you work in a page format and staple books yourself. Include a brief author's bio and whatever art/photos you desire. Some include a table of contents. It might not hurt to make a spoken word album as well.

    -Curtis Meyer
  • K-Dense on August 27, 2007
Unfortunately, unlike what Vic told you, I don't actually write music, sorry.

However, I can give you exceptional counsel as a writer (I confess I have yet to read your work, but I will browse as soon as I get the chance).

Bottom line: The easeist way to become a better poet is to read/hear poetry. The more poetry you expose yourself to, the more your own writing style will evolve as you unconsciously incorporate elements of the work created by your favorite authors/poets.

I tend towards image-heavy stuff in vain of Jeffrey McDaniel, Rachel McKibbens, Buddy Wakefield, et cetera, but can just as easy expoound Hip-Hop-like rhyme forms. Let every type of poetry and literature (including journalistic non-fiction) influence you, even if you don't care for it.

I recommend checking out the following sites: www.gotpoetry.com, www.livepoets.com and www.podslam.org

By all means also feel free to read my allpoetry profile as well as some/any/all of my works posted on this site.

Stay well, I'll be around should ever you wish to ask me anything.
