  • Shamanicmusings : Islam duality on October 28
    Hello,
Islam has a certain duality; it has a magnaminous theory but in practise its political regimes leave a great deal to be desired. There are those such as Armadinejad ( rigged the elections in Iran)who now carries on leading the oppressive regime in Iran whilst Ayatollah Khameini is purportedly powerless to intervene. It is time to let Islam BE Islam (Amy Chua N.Y.Times). Stereotyping is of no use whatsoever and the issues of political Islam would take a whole lot of debate. Only a small % of Mulims are situated in the Middle East. Most are in the diaspora.

great page and thanks for posting the piece on Hijab. I am an american born Muslim woman, who wears hijab and proudly.
  • Your poetry is amazing!
  • Salaams~

Interesting 'debate' you're having with non-Muslims who think they understand what is going on in areas of the Muslim world based on what we're fed here in our American media. I'm a Muslim woman who observes the hijab in the U.S. I really don't think Americans who had no idea about the country of Afghanistan before the year 2001 have any real understanding of the issues, and the games that have been played with the Afghani people. I'm a Pakistani-American who has lived most of her life (30+ years) in the U.S. I was born however in the North West Frontier Province which borders Afghanistan, and I have family there. People judge an entire country and religion based on sensational news stories which are filtered through. And yet the double standard is mind boggling. Violence in general and violence against women in the West are pervasive, and yet this is never taken as evidence as a reason why its social and political structure should be overrun and changed by those who know better. Because it's more complicated than that? Well, it's the same with other countries. We need to afford the same respect to other cultures, which we expect for our own. Having said that, yes, there is violence and misogyny in the Muslim world, just as there is the same in the West. They manifest themselves differently. Both need to be changed.

Remain strong in your beliefs. I like that you feel strongly enough to write a poem on hijab.

    peace~
  • abuyi : replt to earth to jim on January 25
and your point to the poem ' hijab ', ??

EVERYONE is concerned.. even the Afghanis who lives there .do you have any idea to help them besides bombing and sending troops?? cause its already been done and no good result. if you have anything else please go ahead. what ever Taliban does its does without my consciousness, i dont find the reason to answer for there doings.

hijab is a right given to women.. it their choice to use it. now if saudi imposes as a government rule making it compulsory to wear hijab or like dubai which give freedom to where whatever dress.. its their government and their choice.

taliban is kinda like africa. third world country.. in some places of africa people believe in black magic and report a goat to the police as a robber who converted himself.. cannibalism, dictatorship an i dont know what all happens over there??
now the question is are they like this because of the religion they follow or because of circumstances they live in..??

we who i think are privileged to a no. of facilities such as water, shelter, food, clothes, transport, communication and most of all education which we say are necessity to a OUR certain standard of living .. for the citizen of those countries these are luxuries that too many dream off or some cant even imagine. but the whole world is trying to improve africa because of its resources diamonds, coals, minerals, wild life but they point at barren mountain desert taliban...because Osama bombed America!! muslim terrorist!!!

now again do westerners are really concerned about those girls, those fathers, those divorcees???.. cause if they are please look in to Palestine and Israel issue.. if they could solve this, taliban is not far away. all the arab countries can help them only if western countries could let them.. there too busy waging war against terrorism by which they create more terrorist. and other arab countries who dont have any armies have to keep their own countries safe from such issues..
and all this happening is because of those westerners who in the first place invented weapons and then sold in the black market.. to be used by the hooligans, dictators & terrorist in the third world countries.. which i am saying mostly Taliban and some places in Africa..and forces poor citizen of those countries to live life more threatening than of a cockroaches..

i am heartbroken to write this all in such profanity.. i apologize if i have offended .. my intentions were none
  • Exit-Stage-Right on January 25
More than the hijab, Westerners are concerned with Taliban throwing acid on the faces of girls who want to go to school; a father's right to murder his daughter for dating a Christian; a woman needing FOUR male witnesses to testify on her behalf in the case of rape; marriage at the point of sexual maturation (10 year old girls, etc.); divorce by text message (but only if you're a man); that sort of thing.

It is interesting, MOST (not all) Islamic women that live in Western countries have given up the traditional dress.

*hugs you* Friends are like balloons; once you let them go, you can't get them back. So I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you. Send this to all your friends including me and see how many you get back. If four balloons are returned to you, something you have been waiting for a long time will happen!!!! Send a lot of little balloons to your friends!!!

  • cafegroundzero : This man is a man. This man is a poet. This man is my friend. on July 12, 2007
Abuyi is great as any soul could be great. I am only blessed by Allah to have met him here on AP. Alhamdullilah!

I expect, insh'Allah, great things to happen, life to grow and manifest in this man, our poet companion and friend, insh'Allah.

What he says is what he has in his heart. He does not dissimulate. He is real. He is genuine. Again, I give thanks to G-d.

In my own humble opinion, as far as I can see, hijab is both right and effective as clothing for women in the hot sunny climates and also in cold climates. Hijab protects the user from dust, uv rays, and the improper stares of those who have ill intentions. Hijab is taught and upheld by sharia and Quran, and the sage advice of the Prophet(blessed be HIs memory), what he learned in his life, what Allah revealed to him.

I do also believe that a woman who is not Moslem may go about without hijab, but with reason and thought as to the weather, where she is, what she is doing. But I also believe that men should control how and where they look. They should respect woman no matter what she is wearing or not wearing. Men too should dress with modesty, as taught by custom and law.
