ea : Uriah Hamilton on April 22, 2008The poet I am featuring is tender-hearted, fair -
he never troubles anyone or vies for comments here.
He paints a sense of romance mixed with spirituality -
a modern Detroit portrait with a strong humility.
I hope he gets more readers for his talent is unknown
except to just a few of us for he stays on his own.
The poet, Allen Ginsberg, snapped him up and published him -
but being in the limelight's not the point for Hamilton. -
stop drop and roll on October 7, 2006By the rivers dark
I wandered on.
I lived my life
in Babylon.
And I did forget
My holy song:
And I had no strength
In Babylon.
By the rivers dark
Where I could not see
Who was waiting there
Who was hunting me.
And he cut my lip
And he cut my heart.
So I could not drink
From the river dark.
And he covered me,
And I saw within,
My lawless heart
And my wedding ring,
I did not know
And I could not see
Who was waiting there,
Who was hunting me.
By the rivers dark
I panicked on.
I belonged at last
to Babylon.
Then he struck my heart
With a deadly force,
And he said, ‘This heart:
It is not yours.’
And he gave the wind
My wedding ring;
And he circled us
With everything.
By the rivers dark,
In a wounded dawn,
I live my life
In Babylon.
Though I take my song
From a withered limb,
Both song and tree,
They sing for him.
Be the truth unsaid
And the blessing gone,
If I forget
My Babylon.
I did not know
And I could not see
Who was waiting there,
Who was hunting me.
By the rivers dark,
Where it all goes on;
By the rivers dark
In Babylon. -

Mr. Hamilton ~ I just finished reading your poem, "Everything is Love" in the Marcy Jarvis compilation, Brother, My Cup - outstanding and full of light, tenderness and adoration! One of the best I've read in the book thus far. I'm sipping slow like a good cup of coffee (what the hell am I talkin' 'bout - I don't even drink coffee!) But equally as impressive is that which was written about you in the back of the book regarding your search of word combinations, seeking to capture beauty and truth on part of the path you've traveled on your quest to this point. Kudos, Mr. Hamilton! I shall read more in the days to come as they are allowed me. Here's to the elusive trail, and the search to find and behold beauty and truth... ~ Ed Balldinger

THE INVITATION
(by Oriah Mountain Dreamer)
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living...
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are...
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love,
for your dreams,
for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon...
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow,
if you have been opened by life's betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own,
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful,
be realistic,
to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure,
yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
"Yes."
It doesn't interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.
