K-Dense on June 13, 2007Persona pieces are poems, songs, or narratives told from the first-person point of view of someone or something involved in the story or circumstances of the work. They take the classic literary device of personifying something (give something inanimate or non-human human-like qualities), full tilt by having the author become one with said object or character.
In modern circles the best examples include “Stan” by Eminem (from the P.O.V. of an obsessed fan), “Alcohol” by County singer Brad Paisley, “I Gave You Power” by Nas (as a gun), and “Baltimore Love Thing” by 50 Cent (as Heroin).
In classic literature, examples include the narration within To Kill A Mockingbird, A Catcher In The Rye, The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick (“Call me Ishmael…”), and As I Lay Dying (multiple narrative personas). As many of Edgar Allen Poe’s poetry and short stories are told in first person (“The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Raven”), a great deal of his work could be seen as persona pieces.
In modern poetry, the master of the persona poem is Patricia Smith, a black woman who took the genre full tilt with her piece “Skinhead” told from the P.O.V. of a Neo-Nazi, though she has tons of other poems, persona and otherwise, to her credit. Poet Marty McConnell has a series of persona pieces as famous historical figures addressing modern celebrities and/or people of interest (“Saint Catherine of Siena To Mary-Kate Olsen,” “Anna Politkovskaya To Katie Couric,” and “Joan of Arc To The $200-An-Hour Woman”).
I myself have crafted a few persona poems on this site (“I Want You To Be The One,” “Predator,” “Wile E. Coyote In A Therapist’s Chair,” “Black Cop’s Burden,” “Vegas,” “Mom Said This Would Be Esoteric”) and have heard/seen/read persona poems from points of view ranging from Britney Spears’ vagina, to Dracula talking to Ann Rice, to the incredible Hulk, to Superman in an retirement home, to money (“I talk baby”), to a horror film supporting character, to Ophelia from Hamlet in a New Orleans strip-club, to a chair (“Stop sitting on my face!”), to a pawn on a chessboard, to a chicken waiting to become a meal at McDonald’s. I’ve heard specific persona poems and ones from concepts and topics as broad and general as Drama and Revolution. I’ve even heard a persona poem as constipation.
I highly suggest you look up some of the aforementioned examples (mine and others), and try writing a persona piece or two of your own. They are amazingly fun. I recommend practicing by closing your eyes and writing as the first thing you see when they re-open.
In the meantime, please feel free to read my allpoetry homepage profile and some/any/all of my additional works posted on this site.

Andy Stephenson on April 22, 2005Mind your manners - exactly the answer to the poem You won my secret contest. I hated to ruin the poem for "them", but it still works out as a great tribute to Maatkara; a new type of poem: A Double Riddle Acrostic Poem. I didn't expect a winner. "More Than Perfect"
