Yes, you're right; certain emotional experiences can prevent us progressing. I would like to add, that most decisions we make on a day-to-day basis are based on past experience. Simple tasks like turning a tap for water, or pressing a light switch for light would baffle someone with no experience of such technologies. Without our past knowledge, we'd resort to 'trail and error', and that would make us no better than soft automata (animals). Sure, we start out completely dense, but documenting experience allows us to progress.

You perhaps need a new motto which incorporates both sides of the argument. As it stands, it's rather narrow-minded and open to criticism. Of course, all mottos are open to criticism, but the more successful ones can evade it.

I judged you based on the comment you made on the teen board to 'twistedtiger', attacking her over spelling mistakes. That's been deleted now, either by you, or a moderator. The point is, as a member of staff, I don't think you're setting a very good example. Having said that, if an inability to spell offends you, you should have every right to vent your feelings concerning the matter. Twistedtiger has the choice of defending herself, or accepting what you say. Is it wrong, though, because she hasn't the sagacity to defend herself, she should be offended? Is it survival of the fittest - the strongest will emerge dominant? Are the boards an example of Social Darwinism?

It's difficult to say who's right and who's wrong. I’m sure there’s a happy medium.

I totally agree that history is important. I have studied it for years. I do feel that one should consider one's mistakes and learn from them, but I also feel that you can get bogged down in those details and it can prevent you from moving on.

Believe me, I don't need to hide behind authority figures. However, as a member of staff on this site it is my responsibility to point out to you that making certain comments can be hurtful to some people. A lot of what you said is very judgemental. Personally I don't care what some person on the internet says - your opinions really don't bother me. But other people could be hurt by them and react. You want to be the type of person who goes round judging others they don't know, fine, but that is rather sad.
  • Epitome Of Man on November 4, 2006
The quote wouldn't make sense what academic approach one took in reading it. You're suggesting looking to the future is more important than looking back on the past. That's nonsense. It's because we look back on the past, we can learn from the mistakes of our ancestors. Memory and history has allowed us to progress. The past is equally as important as the future.

You can't report what I've said. I've pointed out how your author page offends me. Do you normally resort to reporting someone when you’ve been criticised? Is that how you deal with it - hiding behind an authority figure?

    Lots and lots of love.

    Epitome Of Man.
  • Kei-Aira on November 4, 2006
I think you are a little confused. Any person with half a brain knows the biological reasons for the placement of the eyes and why they differ in different animals. I was being philosophical, coming up with little mottos and things I think are important.

I don't even think you read the text. You do know that what you have said can be reported, don't you?

  • Kari on November 4, 2006
    Her page kicks ass
Edited on Nov 04 because ''.
  • Epitome Of Man on November 3, 2006
There's a lot of nonsense on your page:

"Our eyes are placed in front because it is more important to look ahead then to look back on the past"

I think it's more to do with predatory reasons. Front-facing eyes aid predators, apparently.

Your quotations, if one could call them that, bother me.

I suggest you delete all the text from your author page and just keep the image.

    Lots and lots of love.

    Epitome Of Man.

Oh dear...domestics, huh? The transport going down there isn't great (never try to get a train to/from Cornwall on a Sunday!). I've got relatives there, though, and the National Express coaches are pretty good if you can cope with being cooped up there for a few hours.
Good luck with your ex, btw
  • Kei-Aira on October 30, 2006
A few probs there - it is difficult for me to get to Cornwall (I don't drive and trains aren't good at night). Plus, my ex, who I hope to get back with (if he and I get on) is from Cornwall and I would feel a bit funny about being down there without him!
  • Hatstand on October 30, 2006
Yeah, it's easy to get overwhelmed in the cities. That's the beauty of Cardiff; one of my housemates is from a village in the mountains about 20 minutes' drive away - if you get sick of the city, you can be out of it nice and quick.
If night walks are your thing, I think you'd love Cornwall
  • Kei-Aira on October 29, 2006
Bristol is okay. It's too big for me as I come from a tiny little town, and so I don't really enjoy it, but it is better than some cities. I just miss being able to go for walks up the mountains and seeing the stars at night.

  • Hatstand on October 29, 2006
Haha, tell me about it. I'm English, living in Wales - philosophising at Cardiff Uni. It feels weird going home and not seeing signs in Welsh, and not hearing the accent all the time. How do you like Bristol? I've had mixed reactions from friends there/who've been there.
  • Kei-Aira on October 29, 2006
Doose - Please don't go asking people to read your work. It is a form of spamming and is not tolerated on this site. To get more reads we suggest that you read and comment on others, and they will return the favour.
  • Doose on October 29, 2006
hey greeter...check me out poet: doose....let me know what you think
  • Kei-Aira on October 28, 2006
Well, when you are Welsh living in England is a big deal!!! lol. I am studying in Bristol.
  • Hatstand on October 27, 2006
Forced to live in England? That's no hardship, surely? England is wonderful. Which university are you at?
P.S. - excellent choice in books!

I want a poem to be read to children (thus fitting into the childrens category), not one written in the style of a child. And in future can you please ask questions on the contest page? That way others can see what is going on, in case they were going to ask the same question.
  • smudged on October 4, 2006
i have a question on Round 2. part A, do you want us to write a poem about childhood, or do you want it more of like a "a cow lays on the ground, he's laying next to a hound,"...etc?
