    Hi Zahhar,
There are basically three reasons I chose the name Gaffer. Firstly, it's a reference to Sam Gamgee's father in The Lord of the Rings (Sam's father Hamfast Gamgee is better know as the Gaffer, or Gaffer Gamgee). Secondly, I'm a little odd, and like to do things that are unexpected. It probably would have been expected of me, a young woman, to choose an LotR reference like Lady Galadriel, or whatever. I like the fact that "Gaffer" doesn't describe me at all.
And lastly, I can't stand names that are overly long and complicated or a bunch of words strung together like thepoeticsoulofdarkness. Bleh. One word is all I need. Gaffer. It's short and to the point.
  • Zahhar on May 26, 2006
it's funny. with a logon id like "Gaffer", i had in my mind's eye a crusty old man. lol then i get here and here's this young female cool-colored eyeball peering out at me. why crusty old man from the logon id? you can blame mr. service (you're canadian, so i'm willing to bet you know who i'm talking about):

    The Centenarians
    by Robert Service

I asked of ancient gaffers three
The way of their ripe living,
And this is what they told to me
    Without Misgiving.

The First: 'The why I've lived so long,
    To my fond recollection
Is that for women, wine and song
    I've had a predilection.
Full many a bawdy stave I've sung
    With wenches of my choosing,
But of the joys that kept me young
    The best was boozing.'

The Second: 'I'm a sage revered
    Because I was a fool
And with the bourgeon of my beard
    I kept my ardour cool.
On health I have conserved my hold
    By never dissipating:
And that is why a hundred old
    I'm celebrating.'

    The Third: 'The explanation I
    Have been so long a-olding,
Is that to wash I never try,
    Despite conjugal scolding.
I hate the sight of soap and so
    I seldom change my shirt:
Believe me, Brother, there is no
    Preservative like dirt.'

So there you have the reasons three
    Why age may you rejoice:
    Booze, squalour and temerity,--
Well, you may take your choice.
Yet let me say, although it may
    Your egoism hurt,
Of all the three it seems to me
    The best is DIRT.

Sure am! On the team performance the Japanesse blew em away. Then on the "All around" tournament, he was doing great then fell off the matt on the vault. It put him in 12 place and they said it was practically impossible for him to place... Then afterwards, he did 2 unbelievable performances which both scored higher than 9.8 (btw, his single performance was much better than his team performance. If you didn't see it, keep watching, they're playing the heck out of it. He blew it away that time). Anyway, he came back from 12th with 2 chances left and won gold. It was almost a tear-jerker.

Tolkein and C.S. Lewis (a great friend of Tolkeins) are two of my biggest writing (novelist-wise) influences. So I suppose I am .

Hey Claide, I only saw Hamm's high bar, and I thought that the Japanese gymnast's routine on high bar was much better, but I have heard about Hamm's great performance, so I'm guessing he must have outshined everybody on the other events. But sadly, I only got to watch the high bar. I haven't been able to watch a lot of Olympics. I've watched a fair bit of rowing and beach volleyball and swimming (Did you see men's 200? It rocked! Go Thorpe!!!), and I caught most of the synchronized diving. You're a Tolkien fan too?
  • Claide on August 19, 2004
Olympics, eh? Did you see Hamm's final in the men's all around gymnasitics, thingy doo? Phew, what a show! Quite inspiring.
Anywho, nice to meet you! Always wonderful to pass a tolkein fan. I'll consider joining your contest...
