K-Dense on December 27, 2006You definitely should pursue slam poetry. For the record, there really isn't a "slam style" per se, it simple willingness on the author's behalf to have the guts to share their own work onstage.
Oh, and poet Beau Sia of Def Poetry Jam on Broadway fame is originally an Oklahoma native. Go to www.poetryslam.com, click on the link to the map of the U.S., and from there click on your home state. From there you will be given a list of addresses where you can go perform in poetry slams or at least watch other share their works.

Miss Splenda on October 1, 2005What can I say, wow, thanks for the opportunity enter your contest! I'm overjoyed that I won. "Herbs and Spices" was an awesome idea, I was really lucky to stumble upon the contest as I had been hoping I'd be able to write a poem in that theme.
Anyway, nice to meet you.

K-Dense on September 3, 2005I appreciate your kinds words regarding my poetry. Any time you want to have a conversation, please feel more than welcome. As for my "ideas," well, they come from various places. I don't know if I go out of my way to seek ideas for poems. "Rhetorically Speaking" came out of me ripping on poems including the line "Can you see_?" "Where were you the day_?" "Do you remember__?" etcetera. "Bedroom Archaeology" came to me as I was literally cleaning my room. "The Dormouse And The Elephant" is a rhyming version of a joke I once heard. "Cuddle Slut" and "Political Yaktivist" came to me out of conversations/running gags between me and my friends. "Void" started with me thinking about what it would be like to write a horribly cliche love poem ("Your eyes are like stars") to my girlfriend, who has said in the past she'd kill me if I ever worte a poem about her. Some of my older rhyming work are inspired by rap lyrics ("Beef," "Eyes Open" comes from a Rakim lyric). My social-political poems mostly center around news stories that grab my emotions ("Closed Casket," "SWM Seeks Answers," "Riot At Fenway.") But for the most part, my poems are simply concepts I come up with that I thnk it would be cool to see executed ("I Want You To Be The One, "P.T.P.S." "We Are What We Eat," "The Funeral," "Untitled (My Hip-Hop Poem)" "Butterflies" "The Feminist Womanifesto" etcetera.) Only recently, have I been writing non-conceptual/autobiographical material("Untitled," "Strangler Fig Have Mercy," the "Criticism" triolgy.) In any case, feel free to read as much of my dtuff as you wish, and send me a IM sometime and I'll gladly respond.-Curtis Meyer
