  • ea : Of Lozenges and Porringers on October 19

    The door on the cupboard
    was carved in a lozenge.
    I painted it orange
    and oiled the door hinge.

    Inside of the cupboard
    there sat a porringer.
    I buffed up its copper
    so it would shine oranger.

    I thought my attentions
    would increase the values
    but antique originals
    are better in olden hues.

“An elderly Cherokee Native was teaching his grandchildren about life. He said to them, ‘A fight is going on inside me. It is between two wolves. One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, pride, and superiority. The other wolf stands for joy, peace, love, hope, sharing, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, friendship, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside of you and every other person too.’ The children thought about it for a minute and one child asked his grandfather, ‘Which wolf will win?’ The old Cherokee simply replied: ‘The one I feed.’”

Piers Plowman. Those were good times though I can't help thinking about the lack of indoor plumbing.

But no, I like your choice.
  • ea on September 23, 2008
Piers the Plowman's verse & your translation (yes, it did enlighten a couple of points) is so sweet but I have heard tell that you'd do well to avoid the land of fairy.

Kudos to Meroza on your personalized background, by the way. Per Angusta ad Augusta!

What does "angusta" mean? I would imagine "augusta" might have something to do with wisdom or dignity.

My Latin become so rusty over the years that all I can think of is "cave canem" and "semper ubi sub ubi".
  • WritingWretch : Poem dedicated to you for "dried pea rain". on August 21, 2008
