I missed her this year, just like every year
Christmas Eve of '83
I went to bed in hopes of Santa
and woke to find my Pop wailing in
the hallway like a wounded
creature it
was the longest hall I've
ever bothered walking
She had wrapped a round-red
stuffed mouse and laid
it under her tree with
my name written in her shaky hand
I've never been able to
let that poor animal go -- mended
a hundred times by a 9, 10, 20 year old
in the hopes that Santa will bring
Nanny back
for sugar cookies and
water when it rains
on her back porch.
