Hardened in Earthy Ways (a Riddle for Kimberly)

I've become hardened in earthy ways
Still, I shine with many displays.
When I was young and quite sticky
Most of my "friends" thought I was tricky.
I couldn't run up so I ran down--
Now I'm a color deep in the ground--
With old neighbors still and unnerved
Looking quite fit, well, and preserved.

    This one is tough but I think the answer has finally come clear.

    I thought I'd never make it to 2005. I'm sure I have some remedial work to do, but...

    This is so sweet! Thank you. You know I really enjoy these. I cannot help myself. I try not to look and I tell myself that I'm not going to solve them, but I can't seem to stay away. I keep coming back again and again. I think you have cast some sort of spell over there and when I click... it covers me! I've already IM'ed you what my answer first guess is.
