One More Time, America

One More Time, America
by Al Montgomery and Andy Stephenson

Verse  1

There were years when people still cared
For their friends and families as well
When neighbors still helped each other
And their souls, they'd never sell

Verse  2

How long ago did we forget
The importance of friends and neighbors
When we shared each others dreams and goals
Can't we do that anymore

Chorus

Don't you think it's time to care
One more time, America
Can't we love each other now
One more time, America
We could be that place again
That the world once held up high
Join me now and we can try
One more time, America

Verse  3

So, don't let money be our god
It pretends but can not satisfy
You will always find a whole lot more
With the people who pass by

Chorus

Don't you think it's time to care
One more time, America
Can't we love each other now
One more time, America
We could be that place again
That the world once held up high
Join me now and we can try
One more time, America
One more time, America

    Excellent

This is a great pledge to America, in trouble we tend to stand together then drift back to the same old past hates which seem to be our legacy , through out the ages race, culture and abortion will be an issue.

I love the lyrics. It had a wonderful flow going here. Now that i have said that, i will have to go and have a listen. Your versus were wonderful. I like the idea behind it, and how this was a plea to your country to wake up again and smell the roses. What a great song. You did exceptional and i am sure after i have listened to it, i will think even more so. Go Al and Andy

    well

I wish often that I could go back in time when people really cared and respected each other even with our many faults. It seems now we liketo think we have progressed in stature and mind that we no longer need those old time values. Material things and false faces . That is the new way.

      Hi Bob

Sorry to be replying so late, but I just noticed your comment. Thanks for reading, commenting, and applauding. I appreciate it.

This song is now available on CD with 20 other songs.

It would be nice if America was the sort of place described in the song and sometimes it is. I guess it depends on us to make it that way.

The Letterman Show wanted this song after 9/11, but I missed the opportunity. Al Montgomery and I sat down and tried to write a patriotic song that was subtle and persuasive. It turned out great. Teresa Reprogle performs it. Thanks so much for reading, commenting, and all the applause. I appreciate it.

My speakers don't work. My screen is old. Perhaps I'll listen to it tomorrow on my son's or husband's computer.
I should find the mp3 link for "Gather Round the Baby Grand", the main song I collaborated on. It's on an indie site, under Conneticut Songwriters (CSA), on a cd called "Share the Journey".

This is wonderful lyrics, Andy... I'd love to here it with music And this is the first that I'm aware of you being a musician.... did I miss that in your profile? Anyway, I know now.

Your lyrics here remind me of when I was a youngster... hind site always seems to either be better or worse than the present, and I recall the days when to me, it seemed better back then. No time in history is perfect, but we never used to lock our doors, I never knew of anyone, the whole time I was growing up who was involved with drugs... a Saturday night beer party was about as bad as we got. To me, drugs were something from the movies about big cities like Chicago and New York. I remember seeing the movie, 'The Man With The Golden Arm" and that was the extent of my drug experiences...lol.

Families did seem closer, neighbors (and even families) didn't always get along but we managed to get through it without profanity and grudge holding...awww... the good old days
    A super write, Andy

I don't think America has ever been the ideal that the song represents and I feel in a lot of ways that things are improving. The purpose of the song is to encourage people to care more about each other. Our world image has been tainted as of recent years. Thanks for the comment.

Some people still do care about their families, friends, and neighbors. I was born in 1947. I don't think people cared more about families, friends, and neighbors when I was young than they do now. When I was young racial segregation was still legal. I don't think America was better then. The idea that the past was better is a myth.

Very nice, I can see this being a kind of Indie song, although I see in the author comments that there's a link to listen to it, which I'll do later, as I don't want it influencing my opinion. Kind of a morality story throughout this, telling people to stop being so materialistic, or at any rate that's the message I got out of it, not sure if I managed to explain myself clearly. ~ Osarkon

This is a very interesting write, it is very subtle, it manages to point out that change is needed without coming off feeling accusatory, difficult thing to do. it has a nice easy flow and leaves on with a feeling of hope that somewhere in the undertides there are reasons to believe, well done

were by far the best lines in the song, very good, although i may suggest that labelling the verses and chorus only take away, and if someone can't figure that out on their own, then it really shouldn't matter to them what the content is because they'd be incompetent, anyways, good write, thanks for entering

    Patriotic and Groovy

WOW! I really love this lyric. It has a very patriotic feel without the danger of nationlistic touches. I love it a lot. By the way, I have to say that you are a great person. I like that you believe in Truism rather than a false religion (meaning all of them). Where we came from is trivial, where we are going is trivial. What we are doing now is imperative to live by. I think Denis Leary said it best, when he said, "...Live moment to moment". Anyways, I love your songwriting and your philosophies.
Remember, live on and live again. (Great lyric). CYa

They rolled off my tongue and my mom asked me if that was a new song that had just come out. No lie. you have a caring, loving message, here and at times, at times people ddo come together and care...
I guess, especially these days, not as often as one might like, but if the people stand up, take the country and make it a place of this caring for neighbors-- near and far, just think...
Oh, hopeful song, sung here and there in reality but needs to be sung much more as you ask here in your Lyrics...

    thanks,

Here's a copy of the song lyrics I mentioned in my previous post and the band was the Youngbloods. as soon as I had clicked SUBMIT COMMENTS to my previous post I remembered the name of the band...

    Artist: The Youngbloods Lyrics
    Song: Get Together Lyrics

Love is but the song we sing,
And fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
    Or make the angels cry
Know the dove is on the wing
And you need not know why
    C'mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
Some will come and some will go
    We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
    Returns for us at last
We are but a moments sunlight
    Fading in the grass
    C'mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing,
    You must understand
You hold the key to love and fear
    All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
    It's there at your command
    C'mon people now,
    Smile on your brother
    Ev'rybody get together
Try and love one another right now
    Right now
    Right now!

Hmmm.... Interesting, but it's difficult to tell how you could make this into a song. The rhyme scheme is off, and there is no rythem to the poem. Also, it's way too short to be a very long song. It was a good idea, but it still needs work. Keep trying, and good luck

as song lyrics this reminds me of so many songs, from the 60's...especially one, though I don't recall the title or the group offhand, but lyrics that went:

    c'mon people now
    smile on your brother
    everybody get together
    try to love one another
    right now...

the name of the song may have been "Get Together" and the group the Young Rascals, but not sure. if I recall, i'll let you know and although there's more to these lyrics I know, your lyrics/poem immediately brought this sense of the song to mind, as well as others. really very good lyrics/poem and I'm glad I had the chance to read this.

Whoa I Really Liked How You Used Your Words On This! It's Brilliant! I Love This Part : Don't you think it's time to care
    One more time, America
Can't we love each other now
    One more time, America
We could be that place again
That the world once held up high
Join me now and we can try
    One more time, America
It's Great Work!!! I Love That Part..it REALLY Makes You Think! Great Work! -Rachel

I fear you are unduly optimistic. With lunatic creationism, pro-life maniacs, aggressive imperialism and isolationism on the march, America is rapidly losing its friends throughout the civilised world. Never mind, Israel can become the 51st state.

While I know America has it's flaws it's a bit hard to trust one another with danger in our schools, kids being killed by other kids. I see to many issues in this.

Great job! I'm having trouble downloading it though...my computer is on the under-the-weather side of winter and I might not be able to hear it. I'm bookmarking the link for a later date, and I thank you for being thoughtful enough to provide it for us! There's nothing like reading the lyrics of a song and thinking 'oh, I'd love to hear that' and then not being able to!!! (Perhaps that's just a musicians frusteration, though?? :S)

America has problems other nations do not have because of their policies. I liked this write, but can understand both sides to this issue. Well written.

    EXCELLENT JOB!!!!!

Andy, this song is really a true statement to the situation we have going on not just here, nor Iraq, but, around the world. As you, many people have been involved in these wars whether necesary or not, many have lost their lives in vane. Like you, my ex-spouse joined the service voluntarily, and served for 23 years, and is a retired veteran of many wars... You have touched an issue that causes many contradictions, in pro and contra... I agree with you, because together is the force, and we need to help each other in order to survive this...
Thank you for sharing with me these words if wisdom. I miss you...
    Forever, your friend, Angel

I am afraid that it has already become another Viet Nam and the government keeps trying to build support. Won't work. We shouldn't have invaded in the first place. Wars improve the economy and that has a lot to do with it but people don't approve unjustified killing.
