The Rainbird does not Know

the rainbird does not know
i'm not a bird:

he knows i love his gurgling sound

i echo him at half past five
at six at seven half past eight
and if you think this is absurd
i echo him at half past nine at ten
eleven half past twelve
i echo him and then ... ah, then

he echoes me at half past twelve
at one at two at half past two
at three at four at half past four
and when his sound becomes a bore
i echo him at five and six
at half past seven eight and nine

in dreams the gurgling is sublime
but at the dawn the bird returns

i know he loves my gurgling sound

i do not know
i am not a bird

Author notes

The rainbird is hooked on me ... and I on him ... LOL  Initially he did not visit every day, and he was not at all talkative ... Now he cannot leave ... But he does not see me, so he must believe I am a bird ... and I start to believe that, too! LOL LOL

I love this uplifting piece, and of God's most wonderous creature, He must, so love birds, to give them wings. God must, so love you, to send the rainbird to sing. It is a special joy to communicate with an animal soul. A lovely poem, from a great lady. I raise my cup, and toast you, *Di* (Thank you so much for your very kind comments)

myrataal...I absolutely loved this poem. Just magnificent!!!! Love the way you brought this poem full circle the rainbird not knowing that you are not a bird and, in the end, you say you do not know that you are not a bird. BRILLIANT!!!!! ***Ivy Rose

Thank you, Connor, for reading ... Yes, I know I am. This morning I was fascinated. The female flew away, and the male stayed for almost an hour, gurgling at me. Naturally I answered! LOL Perhaps I say something right LOL

Bonnie, you are not too far off the mark ... if I am correct, the rainbird is a 'child snatcher', stealing nests and sitting on the eggs ... I am not sure though. But nevertherless, what beautiful sound it makes ... and what beautiful name it's got. Perhaps there is a sad poem in here too ... and perhaps you may write it ...

Thank you for enjoying my humorous version ... *Hugs-in-return*

every time i see the word rainbird, i think of stephen king's novel 'Firestarter'...rainbird was the character who was supposed to kill the little girl charlie, if i'm not remembering that way wrong (it's been many years since i read that one, so forgive me for my swiss cheese memory if i'm wrong)...it's also the name of a sprinkler system for watering lawns...totally irrelevant to your poem, myra, but i am mentally wandering tonight...it did bring me some interesting if off-the-mark images, though;) me funny bone was tickled by this poem, either way:) thanks for the smile:)

    *hugs*

For those of you who do not know: the rainbird is a Coucal, with a white breast, burnt-orange head, back and wings, and a long darkbrown/black tail. The rainbird's gurgling sound consists of about 8 to 15 quick 'glucks', the one fading into the other, starting at a mineur high (D)and ending at a mineur low (B) ... and sometimes suddenly turns up at the end, Almost sounding like a very sad, but calm liquidy question poured from a goblet ... or better put, water from a bottle ... This sound is soaked up by me and the trees ... or by all thirsty souls ...
