The Stockings

Missing image

They sleep as little Angels
as "Santa" tip-toes past;
His red clad girth... so jovial,
like "Jello" when he laughs;

They hung up all their stockings,
on the mantle near the fire;
And one mince pie and Brandy
waits upon Santa Claus desire;

He lays out all the presents,
in the stockings... pink and blue;
but oh...what's that!, that Teddy Bear
is starting to fall through!

"Oh dear!, Oh dear" says "Santa";
I need to stitch and darn;
"what did I do with that blue
thread... or was it really yarn"?

He darned the stocking for an hour,
till all was safe and sound;
He heard a noise.. and turned right round;
An angel... he had found...

With big round eyes she smiled at him;
A Bunny in her hand....."I came to see
you Santa Claus...a favour was what
was planned";

"I know you bring things every year"
...the little angel spoke;
"But if you need to give the toys to others,
who's parents might be broke"

"We have our Mom & Daddy and that's all
we really need...but some children, they have
nothing.... so we'd like to intercede"

"A Dolly here, a Teddy there,
a train set painted red...will give some cheer
and happiness..... to other folk instead"

As "Santa" watched this little child go calmly
back to bed...he wiped a tear of tenderness
at all this child had said..."From mouths of babes
it's often said.... no truer words are spoke.............

    just beautiful...

    If you are not a childrens' author, you really should be. You have a such a wonderful gift. I've read some of your haiku. I'm so caught up with college and my kids that I haven't read much of your work in a while. It's always such a pleasure to read your poetry. I get so much enjoyment from it. Knight70

    Very good; I truly enjoyed reading this poem, and it does have a very good message for us all. To often we forget the ones less fortunate than ourselves that perhaps have nothing coming to them for Christmas. If we would just give a part of what we get think how much better they would feel, and so would we--knowing that we had made someone else so happy would indeed make us happy as well. Again, I say you did a very good job on this and I truly enjoyed reading it.

    This is exactly what Christmas is supposed to be about. Giving, not receiving and I agree as well that it should be 24/7 365days per year. A beautiful sentiment.

    cutiepie- I've been thinking about your poem all day... And then it hit me: "When everyone (even the rich) gets something, those who need it most, don't get enough." You touched on that so well here!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice work

    wow... truely heart-felt. truely...
    I do agree with the above (24/7/365) it really should be something we do all year round. i personally think that we should contribute more than the christmas season. (but, sadly, this won't happen for peple today are so self minded and egotistcal (Yes i confess myself on days))
    You did a wonderous job. Bravo!

    This was so sweet. I loved this. Never before have I read anything like this, it was spectacular. This was a very nice write, full of tederness. I expected the girl to find santa, but I never expected her to say those words. She spoke with so much wisdom and cared so much for the unfortunate people who have nothing to give or recieve. Thank you for sharing this beautiful write with us It had great flow and its rhyme scheme was awesome, very nice write.

    Sweet

    a sweet Christmas gift and a classic holiday tale-- the little angel who cared, at this time of conspicuous consumption, for those in need... Santa Claus as Hubert Humphrey (sp?)? Not sure, but if the politics of charity aren't completely dead, you, at least, have tried to breathe new life into the idea!!! good for you...
