A Match made in Heaven

Missing image

He stood his ground with four feet firmly planted
nails dug in....hair bristling... eyes darting
this way and that...shallow rapid breaths snatched
frantically;

She moved towards this Black Knight gazing
quizzically at his narrowed eyes;
Rounded eyes stared towards his.. in the deepest
blue of innocence;

He allowed the hackles on his back to lower
to a slight tremor... then sniffed this dark
apparition before him...she showed no fear
her perfume assaulted his nose ....(heavenly)

She moved in closer... all the while expecting
those fine teeth to rip and snarl at any time
but no....she gently spoke and brushed his
coat with her's....a gentle touch;

He wondered why this place was different;
No air of brutality.. just love and warmth;
She whispered soft words of comfort...
that she had heard whispered to her;

Kissing his eyes and ears was an experience
he had not felt since leaving his mother..
many moons ago....but here was this young
thing adoring him openly;

They were inseperable over the years...
fifteen in all....when his teeth fell
out she would chew the biscuits so that he could
hoover them up with his tongue;

He would torment her gently by nipping her ears
but this was love play....she would wash his
eyes and ears lovingly...always touching
sharing everything;

When he died she cried real tears...then
went to their basket and whimpered for days;
she was inconsolable....He had loved her
unconditionally....and she him.....

She is now sixteen...blind...and a little
lost...she still looks for him in all their
favourite places when she is sleeping...
this was indeed a match made in heaven............

Author notes

This is a true story of Tom & Ellie...Tom was badly abused as a pup and had a hard time in trusting humans but he adored Ellie a small toy poodle puppy that we had at the time of rescuing Tom.
"Ellie" passed away on the 8th Dec 2005 much to my distress. R.I.P.

    This was beautifully written, you portrayed poor scared Tom so well, and then Ellie's reactions and advances etc ... Im so sorry for your loss re Ellie so short a time ago, I know only too well how hard it is to say goodbye :'(

    I wish you many years of happiness with your schnoodle I still have two standards but at the ripe old age of 15 years I don't think they will be much longer for this world, but when they do pass, I know they will be playing painfree in a better place

    so sad to hear of your loss. we had a miniture poodle that passed at 14 about 3 years ago. we had to put the teacup down about a year an a half ago at the age of 14 and it is always so sad. We have one schnoodle that keeps us company now and hopefully for many more years. thanks for sharing!

    My gosh this is exquisitely penned! I have tears in my eyes. This is an incredible love story. My dogs are precious...I know people think I am nuts but I dearly love my dogs and it is amazing to see how they bond with eachother also. This is a treasure and I will bookmark it.

    "Gunner"...sounds like a large breed Dogs often fill the gaping hole when someone close passes on...they have this knack of knowing when you need a hug, or making you get up in the mornings , when the mind tells you not to bother I am glad that "Gunner" is by your side....give him a hug and tell him he is doing a grand job and 1 for "G"

    Many thanks for your kindness . I am delighted that this poem was enjoyable Most animals mate for life , so to me it is doubly hard when one looses a mate . Thank you for your lovely words and if "Tom" were here he would probably nip first and kiss later

    What a beautifully sweet poem This is probably the first love poem I've read about love between non-humans. It was very original I enjoyed this immensely. Well done and good luck in the contest.

    It's just not fair that our little critters don't live longer. They give so much and expect so little in return. Yes, unconditional love. This is so good. Sincerely, David

    Yes you are probably right.. the hardest thing when things are true is to try to inject something that isnt true or dramatic to make it seem more interesting..I shall have to think about that Many thanks for you suggestions though they are appreciated

    This is very sweet ^_^ I liked it a lot. It does seem a bit...bland. Perhaps you should put in more description. But that's just what I love to see in a poem ^_^ Great job anyway.
