I love the sound of heavy, drumming rain.
Drumming on a roof of heavy tin.
Its constancy inspires with clear refrain
And draws my watercoloured dreams within.
I love the sound of plunging waterfalls.
Plunging from height to deep and yawning pools.
Cascading over rocky, fern-clad walls
Inspiring thoughts for poets and for fools.
I love the sound of heavy, surging sea.
Surging onto the rocks along the shore.
The rhythm of the soothing surf to me
Calls and enchants my soul forevermore.
These sounds has Mother Nature made for me;
I know no equal man-made melody.

Author notes
This sonnet is part of a collaborative exchange with SUSANL
who has written a Sonnet (Wyleian XXIX allpoetry.com/Poem/919317 ) about her favourite scents. We intend to exhange views on each other's subject
in future sonnets. Watch these spaces!
Thankyou Susan (Gen) for your friendly help and
intelligent advice.

Dear Maur,
We haven't done fountains (waterfalls make more sound!) but if you watch Susan's site, she is working on a "Sounds" sonnet now (and I am doing "Scents") and you will find that stream in her poem.
I have only covered favourite nature sounds and fountains are man-made so didn't qualify.
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

I'm adding the sounds of fountains and streams to your list..I love all the sounds that water makes and the feelings it generates..soothing and refreshing, relaxing and sometimes, exciting! Lovely poem from the two of you!

With each of these I read, I grow more attached to this form and to the both of you. You are both so inspiring and so very talented. You reach out with your graceful words and draw the reader into a romance. Stunning.

Love the topic and I think this one is one of the best sonnets you've done. Full of imagery & I can almost hear the sounds.

magnificent Sonnet
Dear Hugh and Susan,
Another wonderful Sonnet from both of you, and number thirty, that's amazing. I love the sound of the water on the roof and to listen to the sound of the ocean, which I used to hear every night back in 1980 when we lived at Ocean grove. Victoria for nine months. Magnificent congrats to the both of you~Love~Bea -
On Susan's sonnet I said that the scent of sea brings me a very good feeling, and so does its sound. I just love to hear the sound of the waves, whether it calm on the shore or furious against the rocks.
Wonderful sonnet dear Hugh and Susan! Beautiful images!
Lots of kisses,
Mari

It is hard to believe that we have written 30 of these collaborations! It feels like we have just started and the ideas just keep coming. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of ths adventure. And to think I could not write a line of iambic a few months ago.
I love each of these sounds my self. Water moving can evoke so many moods, you have captured three of them nicely.
Should I tell you what my favorite sounds are?
