As a little boy he would run and play,
with his friends in the neighborhood,
always pretending to be a soldier,
back then his rifle was made of wood.
The years flew by and before very long,
he had become a fine young man,
one day he saw a poster, the words said,
join the Army, be all that you can.
He was ready to serve his country,
mom and dad were proud of their son,
this time playing army was different,
this time there was no wooden gun.
The little boy was now a brave soldier,
leaving his homeland to fight in a war,
helping people to form a new democracy,
as our country did so many times before.
Now he fought in the hot sun and desert,
dodging bullets and mortar rounds,
explosions heard off in the distance,
have become just an everyday sound.
At home mom and dad keep praying,
for a safe homecoming for their son,
asking God to keep him safe from harm,
until his tour of duty is done.
All the soldiers fighting in this war,
played army when they were little boys,
running, laughing and falling down dead,
from pretend bullets from their wooden toys.
Over a thousand have died in the sand,
many more have been wounded in Iraq,
please pray for their safe return,
God bless our troops till they come back.

I have to admit that I almost cringed when I read the first stanza here, 'cause I thought I knew where this write was headed, but I was wrong! This was a wonderful write, and I'm grateful that, no matter what your "politics" are, you chose to write this to honor, and uplift the men who are making the ultimate sacrifice for their country! This was beautifully written, and was so very touching, it actually brought tears to my eyes! An EXCELLENT piece! Thanks for entering!

Great write- our soldiers (and this time it is our. Sometimes I accidently say 'our' when meaning yours but British, American and other nation's soldiers are all heroes out there for us
) are heroes and we should pray to God that they return safely
Good poem, it rhymed and was thankful to the soldiers whilst being impartial which is good- too many poems put a liberal sland on it or make it a tribute to the president

Outstanding
Awesome poem and no truer words were ever spoken. Our men and women in the armed forces are fighting for us and we need to support them in every way we can. The best I can do now is keep them in my prayers. Keep up the great writing. Take care and God bless.
