It's All a Masquerade

We’re living a lie
when we talk about freedom
equality
as our way of life

if you look around
you’ll see the contradictions
the fictions
the fallacies

it’s money
it’s power
it’s authority
behind the masquerade
it’s all a masquerade

I wish I could fly
I’d be just as free as
the breeze that
blows on the sea

then I’d build a nest
a place for believers
conceivers
of love and peace

it’s living,
it’s giving
it’s loving
which makes the world go round
it makes the world go round

Author notes

This is a piece I wrote many years ago when I was much more idealistic then perhaps I am today. Although I have not resigned or become more pessimistic I view the world through a somewhat different lens today. In any event I remain convinced that whatever the question, the answer is more love.

No matter how you wish it were, love that turned the globe,
The world turned well, long before, there was humans to observe,
I sympathise with your sentiments – the prophet sold for profit…
But very little progress we will make, ‘till capitalism coughs it!

i want more to be said here....i feel as if you are off to a good
start, you seem to crack the whip at 'illusion' and then back off
a little by slipping into the fantasy of escaping it through the
    sea breeze...hmmmm....

So much truth in this piece...it's all about money and power. A very sad truth to human nature...we still need idealism tho..that's what keeps the rest of us going.....an absolutely fantastic write!!!!!!!!

Thanks all for the supportive words and feedback. Yes this has been put to music, don't perform it anymore. I've always felt that this was unfinished somehow but then again this was all I really had to say.

I'm all for more love..and tolerance..living life through rose tinted specs is not really healthy, but wearing them sometimes is just fine..

    Yes. I hear you.
The voice in this poem sounded very familiar--I used to be like this, too. But I still believe in Hope. And Love. I think those two 'make the world go round'.
Nice piece, ferg! Thanks for sharing.

The idealism is touching but also saddening. If only everyone felt this way, sigh...

Beautiful and well said. You've nailed the truth, full stop. There is power in a message like this. Pity the rest of the world hasn't caught on yet.

    loved it. xx Tills

So very true Ferg ... sometimes I find myself dreaming of a world where everyone isn't wearing a mask ... where truth is really true and love is the answer for everything. The older I get, seems like that place only can be found inside of us and not in the land of superficial.

Fantastic write ... Much Respect ~ Brian
