Cooking for Susan

Cooking for Susan

Leaving behind the world at last,
she slips through the door
to the sound of marinated something
simmering softly in a shallow sauté pan.
She removes the day from her breast...
like a loving pastry cook peeling the dough
up from the lake of flour
to lay gently upon peaches.
She sits at the table with anxious finality...
as a thin cascade of deep cocoa might settle
into its bold adobe bed for a winter.

The graciousness of her anticipation
rises up and smiles at the chef’s teacher.

While the language of the recipe
is dissolved into spicy sacrament,
and the first weary fork begins its long journey,
she knows, with certainty, why the ice cream stares
at the cooling cobbler, in solemn tiny ceremony,
even joyfully, in an aroma of rest...
and she knows that she is dining on his love.

Author notes

One of my greasest pleasures in life is having dinner ready for my wife when she gets home from her 12-hour shift at the ICU.  It is also very fortunate for me that she likes my cooking.

This is wonderful! A poetic pleasure read about two people in love and lust--husband and wife! What a treasure. And God bless you for cooking! My husband has cooked for me too and we create wonderful memories. Hope life is treating you well. It's been awhile and I'm just checking in on you. Remember, "Saving Little Timmy" and the revelation you spoke of. Well, I can see that it took hold. Blessings and warm thoughts sent your way. Make this a good year with more to follow!--Kel

Not many things in life have caused me to anticipate marriage, even momentarily. I can say that this is one of the few things that has. The warmth is very effectively communicated.

I wish that my girl would hurry up and come home. Thank you for this.

Well, feel free to make a copy and substitute your wife's name if you want. Serve it with dinner, like a placecard. I'm sure she'll appreciate it.

    Thanks for your comment.

This is so refreshing to read, my husband never cooks. Though he is the one that puts in long hours. I also enjoy making his favorite meals. This was a joy to read.

This was very sweet and touching. At first I was a bit confused, but looking it over again (particularly the first stanza) I get it. Great job.

My husband has dinner waiting for me on many occassion when I come in from double shifts at the Nursing Home. I am so grateful for his attentiveness, and love. I can see that you are just as giving with your wife. This poem is so perfect. It makes me give way to a giant SIGH! The free verse style is one to be admired. I love the senses that are teased with this one. I can feel, taste, smell, see, and hear the whole poem, and that for me is sensational. Just EXQUISITE!
