People who share a common direction
and sense of community can get where
they are going more quickly and easily,
if they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
If we have the sense of a goose,
we will stand by each other like that.
When a goose falls out of formation,
it feels the resistance of trying to go it alone
and quickly gets back into line to take advantage
of the lifting power of the bird in front.
If we have the sense of a goose,
we will stand by each other like that.
If we have as much sense as a goose,
we will stay in formation with those people
who are headed the same way we are...
it makes our job so much easier.
If we have the sense of a goose,
we will stand by each other like that.
Finally--and this is important--
when a goose gets sick or is wounded
two other geese fall out with that goose
and follow it down to lend help and protection.
I have the sense of a goose,
and I will stand by you like that.
and sense of community can get where
they are going more quickly and easily,
if they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
Finally--and this is important--
when a goose gets sick or is wounded

and follow it down to lend help and protection.
I have the sense of a goose,
and I will stand by you like that.

needed to read again, thanks
Thanks Cheryl, I just needed to read this poem again. I feel like I'm the Goose that is falling behind. Hopefully soon I can regain my strength and fly ahead of the flock. Yet this poem always brings me love and hope.

A beautiful tale to be told!!!
This is a most stunning write; a most precious tale is told in this natural phenomenon. One of strength in numbers, community and common goals. A message that we were placed here to serve each other and cannot survive alone. That when one falls, we are to 'fly down, pick her up or she will die'. Absolutely beautiful!
Sorry, but you deserved the 'gold' for this one!
Many blessings and

Damn, Momma always told me that, "You don't have the sense God gave a goose". Now I know what she meant...lol

My son was bitten by a goose (pinched?) a year or so ago, and now I have a terrible time getting him to go with me to the park to feed them. I hope he gets over it soon.
I have to admit, geese were not on the top of my list either, but after reading this, I have more respect for them. Thanks for writing this.

We have so much to learn from the creatures around us! This is incredibly beautiful. There is a lesson in Nature's every move and this poem proved that point with so much grace.

Bird Lady...it amazes me to no end...the amount of information that I have learned from you about birds. And I thought that I was such a good bird lover. This poem left me with a feeling
that I cant describe...and at the same time made a statement about life. Simply amazing...Steven -

You and your birds! But what lessons we can learn from them. Such endurance and community. Working together to make a task easier for all.
I knew most of what you have written here, but it was interesting to see it all in one place.
Wonderful and I see that kalen was cheered by your words so I am sure that far outweighs even the bronze trophy that you so fully deserved.
You are a dear friend -

This is splendid. I have read "the flight of the geese", it is a most ingenious story to behold and so are the words you penned here. What a wonderful way to show this young woman how much we all love her and stand at her side. Very clever my friend, done with a sincere heart and love. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BRONZE TROPHY

Cheryl,
What a poem! I absolutely loved this -I truly did. I've never read anything like this before and it did bring lots of light into my life. I wish I could be beside you and give you a hug to thank you.
I have taken so many pictures of the Canada Geese that come to our pond. This year we got roughly (at one time or another) about 150 or more geeze. Can you believe it? And all the poop.
It stank to walk around the edge -thankfully this was when it was cooler out and we didn't go swimming in there anymore. I love you so very much. Thank you with all my heart.

Complex and wonderful
This is fascinating, Cheryl, I only had an inkling about the way geese cooperate. Thank you for bringing this into a human perspective.
Your refrains are very effective, especially the one at the end with the personal note. This is very warm and I was moved.
