Two mothers kissed their sons farewell,
Watched them ride away.
Dust swirling in their wake,
So hurried were these boys,
To run and risk their lives,
For a freedom believed to be real.
Well grown men and motley boys
Came to Washington’s aid,
They really were a ragged lot,
No training to their name.
Battered and beaten, tousled and tossed,
Time and time again,
Still the weary underdogs fought on.
Things appeared hopeless,
Motivation was lost,
Spirits at an all time low,
Two boys missed their mothers,
Grown men longed to be home.
So hurried they had been,
To run and risk their lives,
For a freedom becoming unreal.
At the Battle of Trenton inspiration was restored,
Thoughts of independence renewed,
And from then on, the troops fought valiantly,
Finally claiming triumph at Yorktown.
But in the ghastly gun smoke,
The roar of cannon fire,
Two boys were found deceased,
Their sunken eyes to see no more.
And so young they had been,
To run and give their lives,
For a freedom now found to be real.
Two bodies of young men in coffins,
Lowered to an early grave,
Never to see the hatred,
And discrimination layed out bare,
These two boys died fighting for a freedom,
That was never really real.
And one couldn’t help but think,
These boys would be ashamed,
That they sacrificed their lives,
For a place full of greed and inequity,
With liberty and justice for some.
