In ordinary speech, the object’s surely
to convey, precisely, meaning to another –
to be rightly understood, not too obscurely
nor cause a careful listener too much bother.
In poetry, sculpture, art and music too
communication is the foremost goal.
So why do modern artists go askew
and unintelligible products dole?
Art Galleries pay millions for a daub
that normal people would not look at twice.
Some praise those modern poems one can’t absorb
or music only deaf folk might find nice.
Do those who judge them good have better sense
that tell us we “don’t understand” - or are we dense?

Author notes
This is a 'poke' at those who claim to have superior appreciation of "modern" art and tell us inferiors that "we just don't understand".
This sonnet was written during Susan's absence and I hope I haven't allowed our standards to slip.
Sincere thanks to Mariza GG for helping with the Image and Background.

It's today's version of the Emperor's New Clothes, so far as I'm concerned.

hey, i agree i have been to the tate modern many times in London and some of modern art is very interesting but some of it just seems absurd.. Like the film of David becham.. sleeping... However some modern art challenges your mind and makes you think a little further, then some people take it too far, i wonder, are the artists having a poke at the stupidity our society will go to?

It is so true Hugh, sometimes it is very hard to understand a poem or a piece of Art, I guess the Artist and poet knows what they're talking about but I'm darned if I do
you have written this beautifully Babe.

I agree with all of the above. This is wonderful and well deserving of a Wyleian Sonnet... I agree with you about a great deal of modern or abstract art... When it gets so far out there that you can no longer find it.
I feel that way about abstract poetry. I do not want to have to figure it all out. Now looking for a deeper meaning is one thing, but when I get to the end and go Huh? that is not poetry that suits my taste.
Great write....

Although I would not defend all modern art, poetry or sculpture there is sometimes more to it than meets the eye… as Mark Twain said – Wagner’s music is a lot better than it sounds… which seems to me a good reason to listen to something else lol.
While I don’t entirely agree I did think it was a very well focused write – and a good sonnet. I hope things are well on the ‘mainland’ and thanks for the kind words on mine.

This is beautifully written and I see why so many of our mutual friends read your poetry. I will have to find my way to your page as soon as I finish judging these contests.
Wonderful sonnet.

Dear Hugh - nice one. You've already seen my 'take' on "modern art", but I can't compete with your wonderful sonnets. As for the picture you've chosen - it looks a little like an exploded chicken, or something scratched up by a chicken!

Very good and very true! Once I went to an art gallery and saw some paintings hanging in there and said to myself: 'how in Earth can someone pay for that?' Really, some of the 'art work' were so bad that hurt my eyes
Well, back at your sonnet...always a pleasure to read such a wonderful work on your page!
Thanks for the read!
Kisses and love,

brilliant as always
Very beautiful hugh, you are so right, what they pick seems absurb to us, but to them they are works of Art or writing, I'm sure you've done a brilliant job on this, I'm sure Susan will be pleased with it, I know I am.
Love and kisses~Bea
Applause.
