Autumn Lullaby

When fall arrives as summer ends
And welcomes us with cooling winds
The trees dress up so bright and bold
Trimmed with leaves of red and gold

The morning air is crisp and clean
And meadows have a glistening sheen
Of frost that coats each blade of grass
That sparkles just like crystal glass

A smoky scent floats through the air
Rising up from barrels where
The neighbors burn the leaves that fell
Touched by autumns magic spell

The shrubs and bushes stand undressed
Revealing an empty robin’s nest
The tiny rodents burrow deep
Preparing for their winter sleep

The flowers drop their spring time blooms
And rest within their garden rooms
Awaiting natures wake up call
While sleeping through the days of fall

If you listen closely you can hear
A soothing sound so soft and clear
That closes nature’s tired eyes
As autumn sings her lullabies

What else can I possibly say that hasn't already been said about this poem? It invokes a soothing spirit that seems to inhabit this time of year, and vividly lavish at that. Also, your rhymes work well in this piece (whereas most wouldn't even try these days.) This is very pleasing to the eye and mind. Unfortunately, my mind is running on empty as far as compliments. I hope that this one will do.

Thank you for entering the contest, and the best of luck to you.

    Many blessings,

    Raven Aurora

Aww this was so sweet. I felt warmth inside. I'd say my favorite part is "If you listen closely you can hear
A soothing sound so soft and clear
    That closes nature’s tired eyes
    As autumn sings her lullabies"

Great write and good luck! I'll be judging soon.

You have painted a very graphic and picturesque autumn scene - my favorite time of year. I love the scent of leaves burning - but my wife nearly chokes if she gets close to any kind of smoke. "The shrubs and bushes stand undressed - Revealing an empty robin’s nest" was one of my favorite lines, and the two closing lines were also wonderful.

    Best wishes,
    Moses

You capture the spirit so well. I was raking leaves in the yard yesterday evening and paused from time to time to drink in the autumn atmosphere. You just gave words to everything I felt here. Thanks.

    A+++++++

Beautiful flow. Beautiful poem. I loved it. It's flow is amazing and constant, as if you can sing a song with it. And the meaning of this poem, as it pertains to nature is that of wonder, makes one love nature, and love it even more if they already love it. The words used, the elegance in which you wrote this poem is unmatched. Excellent write. Excellent.

Parts of this were pure poetic magic for me....like "The flowers drop their spring time blooms/And rest within their garden rooms" and "That closes nature’s tired eyes/As autumn sings her lullabies". Very well done poem, in my opinion.

I enjoyed this poem, it makes me think of the times I have spent on the Blue Ridge Parkway, when the air seems clean and isn't polluted from the progress of mankind...You can almost hear voices when you read poetry of this type...these voices that are calling us back to the Earth...to take care of her...beautiful job.

I love the autumn, and I miss it so very much. I live in south Texas....San Antonio. There is no autumn. Now not being a native to south Texas, I do not understand what they talk about when they say go to the hill country and see the leaves changing colors. I think there might be a few trees that have a bit of color to them....and this is autumn.

You have described autumn at its finest. I like autumn when you can smell it and taste it and feel it crunching under your feet. That is what I miss. Next autumn I will be back home in Pennsylvannia, where autumn will taste so good.

    Scented song

    "That closes nature’s tired eyes
    As autumn sings her lullabies"

Such beauty and wisdom in the last two lines - lovely imagery. As always your poems drift and flow and rhymes so eloquently...like leaves upon the wind. Very lovely and soothing write - a song actually - that sings the praises of one of the most beautiful and nostalgic seasons. Good luck in the contest and enjoy the scents and the song of leaves!

This is an awesome poem. Perfect rhyme and rhythm, and very well written. I use the word awesome a lot.. Eek, anywayz, this was beautifully written and full of expressive imagery. You made me appreciate the beauty of fall so much more than I had before.. only because I love the smell of Spring and Summer.. but you made Fall seem just as lovely. Very well done. Maybe you could do the same about Winter?
