I'm not your princess

I don't like the way you talk to me
The way you dumb things down
    when we talk politics
and how you raise the pitch of your voice
like you're talking to a child.
I am not a child

I don't like the way you listen to me
You hear what I say but not what I mean.
Just because I tell you I ate 4 spoonfuls
of peanut butter doesn't mean I think
I'm fat

I don't like how you touch me
How you place your hands around my waist
as though you are trying to protect me
I don't need your protection

I'm not your princess
and I don't want to be
You sympathize with my feminist ideals
But you walk all over them.

Great piece- loved the ending it really showed his hypocricy Great original piece It's as though he's treating her/you as though she/you is stupid, and she/you is too strong to listen Quite a deep poem Keep writing, this was very strong I think the peanut butter thing is so little- yet he still presumes fear about weight I also think it's very original Read this listening to the song and it does go well
    All the best

This is outstanding! Your phrasing is fantastic. ('dumb things down'...I love it!) You project your distaste and aggravation very strongly. This reminds me so much of someone I know. One of those guys who thinks he knows every thing and builds himself up by belittling others. (Just wish my daughter wasn't married to him )An extremely well written piece.

    GREAT!

I say you walk...no...stomp on that guys balls for undermining you. But i'm assuming it's a guy...i could be wrong. Either way, guy or girl, stand up and be the Feminist i know you are and don't take any more of their shit! Awesome write! I prefer free verse poetry for this reason! It gives you more freedom with imagery and word choice. I felt as if these were my words when i first read this...i've been there before!
    Cheers!

    excellent

this is excellent-- especially liked the last lines: "You sympathize with my feminist ideals
But you walk all over them."
i have come across that a lot with certain men i've been close to, making it hard (not impossible) for me to believe men can truly understand and identify themselves as feminist. there's principle and then there's practice and when the two are not aligned there's hypocrisy... keep on writing... keep on being... keep on making art... penumbrapoet

This is amazing! See, I don't like it when people dumb things down for me, but then the 2nd to last stanza kinda set it back a little, ya know. I mean, I'm a feminist to some extent, dont get me wrong, but sometimes I think that people are just trying to be nice, I don't know, maybe that's just me. But Heck ya girl stand up for what you believe in!!!

'you sympathise with my feminine ideas yet you walk all over them' - wow I like that. However I am a barbie girl and would love to be soemone's princess so cannot empathise with your piece of writing, but do recognise good writing when I see it and I see it here.

Nice write. I understand why you put it in the featured box.

    I am impressed.

Yep, condescending guys, people in general, are the worst...I can't say I've heard the song, "Not a Pretty Girl", though, but this was a good poem.

I really really enjoyed this. you can tell it was influenced by "not a pretty girl", but it really stands on it's own too. Great job!
