Why Bach Wrote Canons

Bach fired his music canon
perhaps to extol the Creator,
or conquer his own fear—
can I now be creative?

Canon is a musical form
that is able to both
conquer and extol the creator
depending upon his contrapuntal skills.

Form will conquer and confine
the would be musical creator
who might rather read Canon
than expose his creative merit.

Confine merit to the Canon
and there find a Creator
worthy for you to extol
able to conquer all fear.

a superb analysis of how strict form affects art, artists and the reader/listener; a subject that is very "debateable" today, you deal with it in a very sophisticated way. my thoughts on bach's uber-structural stuff fluctuate all the time...anyway, congrats on a very inspiring piece. hex

    Great lingering quality!

What an interesting write - very refreshing indeed! I loved the alliteration and the word play and the different meanings attached to "canon" and "creator", etc. I have a lovely midi-version of one of his canon's and when I saw the title of this poem, I heard the music. Indeed the question can be asked, who is the canon and who is the creator at the end - the composer or the music (the form, the style) - the poet or the poem (the form, the style) - who sets who free to conquer? Very thougt-provoking poem with a lingering quality....I wonder!!
