He doesn’t really understand the happiness he brings
“Come and look at what I made” are words I often hear
I have a little box that holds these treasures oh so dear
We call it Daddy’s Treasure Chest and it’s a special place
For kept inside are gifts that bring a smile to my face
From time to time I’ll take it out whenever I feel down
It never fails to cheer me up and take away my frown
Inside are little trinkets that no one would care to see
But they are much more precious than a diamond ring to me
A little hand drawn picture of the “Super Devil Dude”
Some marbles and some colored rocks are things that I include
Each item is a memory of loving times we’ve had
A penny and a colored heart that says “I love you Dad”
A hardened piece of bubble gum he brought me home from school
To me this little heartfelt gift’s more precious than a jewel
There’s a little colored sea shell that fills my heart with bliss
Because he told me “Daddy we don’t have one that’s like this”
It really didn’t matter that I had six more of them
This one’s very special because it was a gift from him
A rusty bolt and washer and a burned out little fuse
Things that he found in the street he thought that I might use
A little plaster handprint with a date scratched on the back
A yo-yo with a broken string and a shiny bright thumb tack
A plastic purple dinosaur and a box of pencil lead
His favorite book of stories that so many times we read
An old pair of sunglasses that are cracked next to the rim
A broken rubber band to make a great sling shot for him
And when my son gets older then I hope he’ll understand
How great a gift he gave me with that broken rubber band
And how much love is stored inside that little cardboard box
Mixed with all the marbles, shells, and the little colored rocks
Each item is a gift of love and memory of fun
Given to a father by his precious loving son
And if you ever ask of me what gifts I love the best
I’ll show you an old worn out box called Daddy’s Treasure Chest

This is awesome. I love reading about the happy memories and treasures. Your poem carries much sentiment and beauty. Thank you for entering it here. I love the background too.
-
Oh this is wonderful. The rhyme was great, the story was beautiful and it touches my heart. If you just replace daddy with mommy I would hope that I will be holding that treasure chest in my hands in a few short years. My son already picks up every tiny thing he can, but I'm not ready to call straw and cigarette butts treasures. Maybe when he gets old enough to give them to me instead of trying to eat them. LOL Thank you for entering my contest. Patti

Out of the 9 years that I have been a mother. The most treasured things I have were given by the love of my son. Priceless gifts, hand made by him... I will have to die before I ever get rid of them. So to you my fellow poet, hold on to the treasures... because before you know it... Your precious little boy will become a man, ....
Thank you so much for entering this in my contest. It brought tears to my eyes as I thought of my children and just how precious even a torn paper really means.
Many blessings my friend,
Tammy

beautiful
Truly beautiful - and brought a wistful smile - my grandson has just started his "treasure box", and it brings memories of the one I had as a child - with the photograph of the father I never knew.
Beautiful, extremely well written with a flow that gently carries the reader through to the end - fully deserving of your trophy and well done indeed.
-
Awww this is so beautiful and true! You've definitely proven that it is the sentiment behind any thing that truly gives it worth. Awesome write!
Thank you for taking the time to enter my contest, and for your patience with me in judging (things have come up unexpectedly that are making sticking to my self-set schedule nearly impossible.)
Love and light,
Jenna -
Wonderful, simply wonderful. It flowed beautifuly and was just so cute. It reminds me of the ugly piece of pottery on my Dad's dresser that one of my brothers made back in elementary school. Great write.

I luv it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is absolutley amazing. I am marveling as your total awesomeness. This is so heartfelt, and your son is so lucky to have a dad like you. Especially one that is such a great poet. the most creative my dad gets is adjusting the flash on his camera. Photography can be beautiful, but it doesn't captivate me as much as poetry does. I really like the descriptions. I could just see you standing there with an old box decorated with marker and pencil, pointing out the different gifts. It also reminded me of my mom. She's just in the other room, but i miss her. I think i'll go hang out with her right now. bye ya'll! -
Creative and Beautiful!
This is beautiful and almost made me cry, even though I was grinning like an idiot as I read this. Your son is truly blessed, and, really, I hope he understands how much obviously means to you! You use emotions to your fullest and catch the readers' eye with the detail.
Marvelous! -
It seems like you really know ways to write to peoples hearts. Every single poem that I have read of yours makes me melt. Its absolutly amazing. Really, I enjoy it.. keep writing
Your Friend,
Laura -

This is absolutely lovely! I could really feel how much you love your son- it was so truthful, and obviously honest. The emotion in this piece is unbelievable- you can't get much better than this, really. It was so sweet and warm- a comforting piece that would lull any little-one to sleep.
Oh my goodness... this was absolutely fantastic! Great write! -
excellent!
Beautiful poem! Another great write! -
What can a man say here. I have a daughter, not a son, but I did the same thing when she was growing up. She's a beautiful young woman and I still keep cards and whatnots she hands me. There are times I wish she were still as small as this young un' in the background here. This is beautiful poem.
-
This was so beautiful... absolutely the sweetest poem I've read on here in a long time I think. You must be very proud to have such a sweet son!
Let the ink keep flowing. *Sonya*

touched my heart
this is great. itr must have truly come from the heart! this has to be one or the best poem i have read so far. i will definitely be reading more of your things, and if i could applaud this poem a m illion times i would. great!!! i especially love the line, a penny and a colored heart thats says i love you dad. -
No fair Steve! Now you have me all teary eyed. This is simply a jewel of a poem. I think most mothers keep little trinkets that their children have handed them over the years so it's nice to see that somewhere there is a father who places as much value on such things. That's a very rare thing. You are not only a very talented and gifted poet, you are a man with a very big heart. Don't ever lose that sense of value that you possess. It seems to me that you know exactly where your priorities belong. This is simply beautiful. There are no other words to describe it.

Amazing poem!!
Steve, Tears and smiles are what I felt reading this poem.
I too have treasures that belonged to my Grandma & Pa.
They took me in to live with them when I was 14 and needed love.
The treasures that I have, If only people could see how careful I am when I take those items out.
Amazing poem!! Like I said, Tears & Smiles at the same time

This is a superb write sewasham! you only seem to get better it was incredibly lifting and it makes you understand that it doesn't matter how much money you spend its how much love and care you have for your family and that they know you love them no matter what

good write, i think we all have things that would appear useless to other people, but are very meaningful to us.
~Kate -
Again great write coming from you. I enjoyed all the different objects you came up with for the box and how they were important to the dad but any of us would think he is crazy for keeping that stuff. God bless you my friend. Great write.
-
how wonderful and touching it is that you have a treasure box!
this was definitely a well written poem which has love shining from the heart of it
very good! -
Aww! This was really sweet and simplistic, and so true. Any mum or dad is exactly the same which is why this little piece of truth is so touching. It's the simple things in life that make us who we are afterall
-
This was delightful, so human and emotive. It brought a tear to my eye and your rhyme was perfect.
-
Great Read
I don't usually like reading longer poems, but this one really caught my attention. How often we discard little momentoes that loved ones, especially children give us - not realising that down the line they will be more precious than gold. Thank you for reminding us of the precious gifts that we really should treasure and not the materialistic treasures that we usually consider precious.
Well written too - seamless movement and flow, to tell you the truth I was expecting a punch at the end - was this child missing, dead - how heartwarming that no he is just growing up with a loving father.

This had a sweet message to put across that pulled at my heart strings when reading.... But, I would have been more affected if some of the lines were crafted a bit better. The rhyme scheme seemed to limit you rather than increase the flow of the poem, I would consider changing some lines to fit the rythm and rhyme better, or leave the entire scheme behind.
-
Touching
I think this is one of the best pieces I have ever read...I have often thought I was silly for saving those little things that most people would throw out...To me those things mean so much...Truly you have poured out your heart on this write and I applaud you for that...There are some things in life that cannot be bought but can only be given as treasure of love from an innocent child...Thank you for such a memorable write.

Simple, but very sweet and touching - well done -
Goood! :D
Also it really makes you feel good inside - a nice change from the depressing stuff I and many others write!
-
Amazing
Awwwww! This poem is really moving! Thanks for making my day
-
heartwarming:)
What a sweet melancholy and sentimental write , and how well I can relate. My kids are a bit older now...and they kind of smile at the things that I have collected ever since they were small , and they either made or found ...and I have a box just like that, and now and then I take it out and touch each object lovingly and I am transported back to such happy moments, and I know that if I get to be an old lady i will still sit in my rocker and do exactly the same thing and share it with grandchildren and hopefuly great grandchildren

oh that was wonderful! It brought a smile to my face and warmed me inside to out. The rhythm was perfect and it had a really good shape!
-
this was incredibly touching, any father who loves his son as much as you do deserves all the blessings in the world.
i really don't know what else to say. this is leaving me speechless, which is something hard to do.

Excellent!
Wow! I have to say this is a favorite beauty. -
I love this poem it reminds me of how my husband feels about all of our boys. And we too have a treasure chest were we keep all of the things they have mad over the years. You portray a wonderful picture of the relationship between you and your son. I hope you continue to share this wonderful bond. And i look forward to reading more of your work

This is so touching. It is the little things that make up a good life. Noticing and appreciating them is what makes life so dear. You wrote a really loving poem with real heart. A difficult thing to do!
Loved reading this. ~ Joyce
PS. I so agree that what I have from my children are my most precious gifts. Their smiles and hugs and kisses left imprints that will never leave. -
overcome with emotion...=]

That was great! I really liked it. It was really smooth, and soothing to read. It was a beautiful poem to your son
props!
-
All of your writes always bring a smile to my face, but this one outdone them all. I was looking for something the other day in my dad's home, and I found some old hand made cards and things from when I was a child. I also found the plaster hand prints that I made when I was 4 years old in Bible School. It had my height and weight at the time also. I showed them to my niece. It really touched her heart to see how much these little things mean to parents and grandparents, and her aunt. She is always giving me little things like some of her homework that she got excellent grades on, and pictures that she colors. I came in the other day, and she had made me another card. It was piece of hard candy glued to a piece of cardboard. It spelled out "I Love You Aunt Bec". Those little gifts are more precious than any diamond ring or any amount of money. They are the gifts of Love. Sorry to carry on so much. Excellent write. I was deeply moved by this piece of work.

AMAZING
wow...this is really beautiful!! every word came from the bottom of your heart and you mean every one of them. reading this helped me understand a little bit why my parents saved and are still saving stuff that i do....its b/c they love me and care a lot for me. so thanx for helping me realize that. great write!! keep it up!! ~Alyssa~ -
My mom put her treasures in a cigar box. A turkey drum stick made of paper dipped in glue, a mold of a tiny hand, cards made by hand sayin I Love You Mom. Treasures worth more than gold.
I do enjoy your writings. So comfortable and loving.
BonBon -
I didn't like this verse it ruined the whole context of the otherwise outstanding verses
And when my son gets older then I hope he’ll understand
How great a gift he gave me with that broken rubber band
And how much love is stored inside that little cardboard box
Mixed with all the marbles, shells, and the little colored rocks
I suggest you rewrite it. Peace <3 -
Awesome write
Nothing less then fantastic. I had a sister much younger then I. I keep an old shoe box with treasures she sent me through the years. She died a year ago last January at age 56. I never knew what a blessing that box would become to me. Thank you so much for writing this beautiful poem. The poem itself is written so well. The rhyme and flow shows so much talent. -
aw! that is so sweet! my daddy does something like that, too, only he thinks he's doing it in secret, but i found out last year. It is so touching for kids when they get older to see how much thier parents really care. The ryming and flow is not forced, but feels natural, and the details paint an adorable picture of a loving father. great poem!
-
Excellent
Wow bravo bravo. This poem actually touched me. It made me think of my dad, and the lil trickents that we used to keep in his lil treasure chest. And as I think back I am glad that we did bc Now since my dad passed away I have those memories and lil keep sakes that I will always treasure. And this was a wonderful poem of love that you have expressed to your child. Again This is a great work of art. -
That was an amzing poem. I remember finding old suitcases belonginb to my parents and finding my old schoolbooks and photo's of me as a child in it. It was really touching.
-
Superb
Another masterpiece! I appreciate how you look at life and help others to see through your eyes. That poem just got stuck in my throat. I don't think I took a breath until the last word. -
bravo
That has to be the most tender poem! What a loving tribute to your son. And one day he will know just how special he is to you. When I've shown my children the little boxes that I have kept with all the gifts they have given me. They would reply, I can't believe you haven't thrown that out! Now that they are a little older, I can see in their eyes how genuinely touched they are. When my aunt passsed away years ago,we came upon an old worn jewelery box,in it,all the cards and trinkets I had ever made for her. I never knew she had them. I still have it to this day. -
awww!!! That's so sweet!!! I was snooping around ( I know, I know, it's bad) in my dad's office last time I was out there ( Christmas is coming, and he's usually early..) and I found drawings I had made for him nearly 10 years ago. It made me smile, and realize how special they were to him!
