And What

And what if the sky were to fall,
Blue chunks raining down upon us
From somewhere above that we never
Really could place a finger on?

And what if the oceans dried up today
Leaving a salty residue on the sand
And a million fish homeless for eternity,
Waiting to be delivered to destiny?

And what if the trees all fell around us
And built a barrior between us and the world?
Chainsaws blaring, it wouldn't be enough
To free us from their wooden prison.

And what if God really did smote us,
Looking down from where ever he is,
Finally realizing we're not really his image,
And not really what he'd hoped for?

And what if one day you look at me
And realize I'm not what you'd hoped?
What if you realize it was just a mirage,
And I'm something different than you wanted?

And what if the planet were to stop turning,
And just died here on it's axis in space,
Leaving us hanging on and screaming to Heaven,
Giving them the judgement they really want?

And what if I lost my faith and didn't care,
Because you weren't here with me anymore?
What if it didn't matter to me anymore,
And I let go when the world stopped turning?

And what if you took your arms away from me,
Stopped holding me close in your protection?
What if you weren't there when I woke up,
And what if I realized I'm really alone?

The what ifs are gone in the back of my mind,
Tucked away like a horrible little secret.
Because right now, right here, you are with me,
Holding me tight in your beautiful smile.

Beautiful piece of work. It really speaks to me...especially this verse:
And what if you took your arms away from me,
Stopped holding me close in your protection?
What if you weren't there when I woke up,
And what if I realized I'm really alone?

Sometimes we feel this way...don't we. Well crafted and universal....write on!

I am quite impressed with this piece and normally do not quote back a person's work but I love this stanza..."And what if I lost my faith and didn't care,
Because you weren't here with me anymore?
What if it didn't matter to me anymore,
And I let go when the world stopped turning?"...for some reason it just reaches out and grabs me...
