I walk along the riverside
And listen to the wind's
Gentle, whistled song.
I walk on through this
Muddy, wet ground
Ankle deep in thought.
Off in the distance
I hear the cars race by,
Not sure to where they go.
But those tires tear apart
The world here on the riverside,
The world I made anew.
My place, here, among the rocks,
The broken, twisted branches,
And the brown, crisp leaves
Fallen long ago.
The trees stand tall guardians,
Silent, yet watching, feeling.
I see your face in the water,
See your smile in the brush,
I smell you in the air.
The wind touches my face,
And in that touch
I feel you.
Water splashes under a duck
Landing smooth and calm,
Floating there in it's wake
And lost to itself.
Stalking on the river bank,
I watch, quiet and alone.
The water here is brown,
Thick with mud and rain,
Yet in there I see you,
I feel you on the wind.
Your voice carries me away,
Along the side of reeds.
I've never met you,
But well I do know you.
I've never heard your voice,
But you speak to me.
Far away you are,
And I am here alone.
Carry me away, oh wind,
Across the river high;
Carry me to another realm,
Where I may sleep once again.
Carry me far away from here,
Oh, carry me to you.

I really enjoyed the way you described the somniferous qualities of the wind.
Okay Okay I was just dying to find a way to use that word, but seriously, the last stanza nails the meaning of 'somniferous' as adj. inducing sleep:
"Carry me away, oh wind,
Across the river high;
Carry me to another realm,
Where I may sleep once again."
Beautiful! Good luck in the contest. -
This is so beautiful!! It is just so sweet and filled with longing and also a belief in looking for that special love. I just love this! Hugs, Penny

This just reminds me so much of a Celtic story sung in the tongue of Gaelic. I love the imagery and the peacefulness that you have placed within th evoice of the poem, and even though I am surrounded by modern technology as I read it, I cannot help but escape into the realm of the imagery forests that you have painted here. gregg

This is really lovely - and i love the feathered background...it seems like you could trim it up a bit - its a tad long - but otherwise, as i said, lovely
