Birdsong fills the crisp cool air
and echoes through the trees
it mingles with the rustling hues
as they whisper softly in the breeze.
Sunlight dapples on my skin
dancing in pure delight.
The flames that linger on the limbs
in shimmering rays ignite.
Shadows lengthen as the sun
sinks slowly toward the west;
and I shiver with impending gloom
as I quicken o’er my quest.
Somewhere ~ I can’t see them
ashen gardenias bloom.
Their heady scent overwhelms me
air thick with their perfume.
I curl my toes in ecstasy
crisp leaves beneath my feet
As I stand among this glory
I feel ~ almost complete.
Puddles gather radiance
and reflect it back at me
as we join, enthralled upon the path;
littered with fall’s debris
I savor your piquant hungry lips
conveying love that will not cease;
and here upon this forest floor
I unearth ~ perfect peace.

That last stanza was my favorite. What a perfect way to end this stunning journey!
