Oh, that is simply the name of that species of dove . So called because their call has a mournful sound to it. All dove species are monogamous.

I don't really follow the imagery. If they are a devoted and monogamous couple, why must they be mourning or lamenting??

They are good eating, and they are much more numerous than ducks. I am sure that is why people hunt them so much.

Thank you, Cheryl! Yes, I recently discovered they are hunted! I don't quite understand it, are they supposed to be good eating? I would have thought ducks would be better for that, being bigger.

I am not sure who is intruding on who here? Are they peeking in on me, or am I sneeking a peek on them?

Your haiku matches your photo. Wonderful. I really enjoyed it.

    Thank you for your entry.

When it comes to building their nests, he stands on her back and offers her sticks and twigs, which she incorporates into a bowl around herself. The female lays 2 white eggs, which both parents incubate for 14 days. Both parents regurgitate crop milk to the young birds (called squabs). After 5 days, seeds are added to their diet.

Mourning Doves are the most hunted game bird in the United States.

    Excellent

    Hi Gennelle:
Well, the Haiku matches wonderfully, the picture you used to portray the beautiful couple. Only if many people in this world could follow suit, the world would be a better place. Monogamy is not dead, dispite all the doomsayers. Thanks. Bill

Awe so darling and yet reminds me of Love Story
The image could be a mother and her child or two lovebirds
Even in nature two are the key to one heart!
Your muse is brilliant and running overtime this nature photograph is simply divine
Penn on my bright light friend
You’re on a poetic journey that shall never end.
Your breath of heavenly words and nature photographs
Give all of us such inner peace!
This is what I love to do go on long nature walks and reflect so deeply
And with the dolphins and the birds
We can share our love and words

    Lovely

Ah, so sweet! The photo is amazing, as if posed for the occasion! They are farther north as well, peaceful, gentle birds with slight iridescence around the neck if the light is just right. Thank you for this! --Dee

    Good image, nice picture

We have these lovely doves around here too. Their gray plumage resembles the mourning dress in a previous age, no colours. Their cry of "who, who?" is a memento mori.
Your haiku brings up simple facts again. Well done.

Awww... I have to say, I just love this. If the haiku wasn't enough, that image sure is. What a precious image and so perfect for posting with this haiku! VERY nicely done!
