Weeping tears of gold and brown
You grieve for Summer’s demise
Each shrivelled, brittle drop
Falls slowly in gracious sweeps
To carpet, with honour, the earth
Substance given in recompense
Food for the future: fulminating fodder.
With each rending of the cloth of life
Your stark and naked arms stand bare
Majesty unadorned and unbowed
Defiant deity of the afternoon
Within your proffered cloth
Small creatures burrow for respite
From the bite of Winter’s harsh call
Sacrificial season, we salute you.
You weep tears, not for sorrow, but for life
