Constantly Alive

I asked my lover why he wanted me
He tells me I am beautiful
and without it I'd be empty
I asked my lover what he thought of me
(As lovers go)
He tells me I am beautiful
and without it I'd be lost
a sailor at sea
because beauty is power, he says
So I am power
Power is dangerous, he says
so I am danger

He told me my body was intimidation
I asked him how this was
the way it curves, he says
is foreign to his own
the way my lips meet his, he says
makes him shiver as if they were frost

I ask him why he loves me
He tells me I am beautiful
But beauty isn't real, I say
So, I am not real
The bit of subconscious we call fantasy
but I can only be it
I cannot fulfill it
to you I am a dream
but to me (As lovers go)
I am constantly alive

Like a fool you reach for
the part of me that fades
you love my mortality
Like a fool I give you what you want
I only take what's left behind
the pieces you've forgotten
