I really like this poem it is Amazing. How it shows the hardship of many Women ago but over all it shows us that we can never give up because there are always people all over the world that suffer more than we do and that they have gone through harder times than us, giving us no reason to surrender in our struggle or fight.
Poetry is necessary for all students to read, especially if you are into ARTS and Humanities. I am a student at the Towson University, I have 2 degrees in Art and Architecture. Being a logic driven person, I felt the same as most people about poetry as do many that it is a dying art and should be buried with its creators. Since the invention of the TV and reality sitcoms, the youth myself, included resort to the mindless fodder that the multi-million dollar networks broadcast for our source of entertainment. We no longer want to be enlightened. We are to quick to dismiss something as stupid or unnecessary if it is beyond our level of comprehension. I would like to assure that all things are connected. In some cases it is poetry that has given us insight to what was going on in a particular time period. The words that someone has taken the time to write on a page sometimes have a deeper meaning or express views that give the reader insight about the time. Poetry is an act of rebellion in some cases, it was away around censorship and persecution of one's beliefs, views, or cries for change or reform. It not only appears in poetry, but art and music too. It goes far beyond the words written on the page. Sometime the writers or poets are telling you about themselves. When learning poetry you should look at the time is was written, the person that wrote it, the setting, what is going on in the poem, ect. To me poetry is like solving a mystery case or finding the meaning of a riddle. So stick with it! See past the end of your nose there are so many things to discover. The world does extend further than your comfort zone. It is okay to be uncomfortable sometimes.
poems are good but i dont think we should be force to learn about them in school because i hate them and dont get them and that brings my grade down and i dont need poems to be successful in life. Huge waste of my time
I love this. I am a son and I felt like my mom was reading this to me. Thanks for sharing
Langston Hughes is known for creating poetry derived from an oral tradition, in which poems are recited and passed down orally, not necessarily published. He strives to use language that portrays the lives of a downtrodden people. In this poem, especially, the language is meant to create a sense of informality. Mothers speaking to their children do not always use "proper" English. He was a gifted man.
Apparently that person doesn't know poetry enough to comment telling people whats wrong. People who understand that poetry can be written in many forms and perspectives would have known that it doesnt matter if them are words used by everyday people. Its a poem from a mother to a son so apparently it was how he viewed it himself. People dont walk around using full words all the time or even words that are actually real words. Poets dont look at things like that, either way everyone who reads this understands the meaning behind it despite how he chose to word it. Stop saying rude and impolite things just because you may not understand the words. Its clear you understoof it..this is english, his version of english may be a tad bit different than yours!
sheesh grow up.
On a lighter note i love this poem....i fully understand the concept...shes telling him its going to get hard you'll have things that try to stop you but you shouldnt give up...coming from her shes been through it all and was still going strong.

Power FULL!
WOW !!
Beautiful.
Beautiful.
Words of wisdom from someone who appears to have weathered some of the worst and come out of the experience intact. Love the colorful language and the message contained within.
This is such a great poem if only the world had mothers with this advice for everyone
Pity more people don't know about one of the greatest poets of the 20th century. Langston's classic "Mother to Son" speaks not only to the struggles and hardships of African Americans in the 1920's and 30's but also expresses a universal truth that all people can recognize-- and take heart from.
wow! its fantastic.
An amazing piece of work ^.^ I love it
