I saw you there the day that you arrived,
So small and premature, yet you survived.
You grew so fast, into that little girl,
You were the first, your granpa's priceless pearl.
I always had believed I'd see you grown.
Back then there was no way I could have known.
This heart of mine, so full of love for you
Gave clues to me I could not misconstrue.
And so my child, I tried to live those years,
To give you only joy, and hide my fears
That I'd not see those days of precious life,
When you become a woman and a wife.
So please, sweet girl, don't measure life by time,
Don't think of ticking clocks and steeple's chime.
Instead think only then of what we've shared,
And rest assured your loving granpa cared
About each word and smile that came his way,
And all those games of tag we used to play.
We've no more of those games to play and yet,
I hope that they are times you won't forget.
So please forgive this gramps who had to leave,
Whatever now you do you must believe
That had I had a choice I'd not be gone,
I'd be on earth with you from this day on.
So think of me sometimes when you're alone.
Those days we had all too quickly have flown.
And when you sit at night and watch the sky,
You're looking at your granpa, eye to eye.

Wow... This touches the heart something fierce. Simple words and phrasing form elaborate webs of emotion and feeling... I have much to learn from you!
Always,
