Oh, Lord, I'm sinking helplessly
Because I took my eyes off Thee.
I've tried to walk, my gaze off You,
But worldly cares were in full view-
Next I knew, I was in distress,
Sinking fast in my faithlessness.
Yet as I sunk below the wave,
I only had to cry, "Lord, save!"
And, instantly, You caught me fast
Securely in Your mighty grasp.
And, though in doubt and fear, I sinned,
You led me back through boisterous wind-
No wave could pluck me from Your grip;
You brought me safely back to ship.
And then, my worldly cares did cease,
For with You came a perfect peace.
Lord, how dare I to even come
With wav'ring faith in God the Son-
To venture out in my own might
Unless I keep You in full sight?
And, once I am outside the boat,
You're all I have to stay afloat;
For I cannot expect to stand
Unless I hold Your mighty hand.
Oh, Lord, forgive my faith so small,
I know You are my All in All;
Please search my heart and cleanse me through-
I long to trust and worship You.
And, Lord, when I neglect to heed
That You are all I truly need,
Remind me any way You must,
For, though You slay, I'll learn to trust,
And chasten me until I turn
If that's the only way I'll learn!
It's suff'ring through each sovereign test
That teaches me Your way is best.
Oh, precious Lord, please hold me near-
The fear of sinking still is here.
I'm trying hard to do what's right,
To walk by FAITH, and not by sight...
Increase my faith, and shield my heart
To block the devil's wiley dart;
For he would have me always down,
And could care less if I should drown!
And help me take the time, dear Lord,
To wield the weapon of Your Word-
I cannot cut his lies in two
Unless I find Your promise true.
Oh, thou of little faith, why doubt?
The Lord knows what it's all about!
We have no cause to fear or fret,
For every need we have, He's met;
And when you doubt and faith grows thin,
You only need to look to Him.
For, even in the darkest night,
He is our Everlasting Light.
With eyes on Him, just walk His way,
For He will guide you day to day;
And when you take His hand, you'll see
It makes each step come easily.
So much to learn- Lord, hold me fast
Until I'm through life's final blast;
And Heaven shall be bliss for me,
Because I'll have my eyes on Thee.
Author notes
It's not so much about focusing on God as it is about giving Him our complete attention!

This is a great poem... I loved the rhyme and flow, I must say it is one of the better ones in the contest that I have read thus far. Amazing work, I am helping Megan judge her epic contest so I wish you good luck and thank you for entering!

Good
Good pooem, and so many of us can relate. Sometimes walking in faith is a constant struggle, but prayer and reading the word can keep us on track. -
heismysong,
This is such a stunning and resonating poem for me and I'm glad to have come across it. I've needed these words! I too struggle with taking my eyes off Him and then faltering in the waves. As of late I have let my gaze on Him slip and you're right, we've only to cry "Lord, save!" and He does!! I ran across your page through Reflected Light. I'm glad I did. I look forward to reading some more of your poetry!
