Hallowed halls of learning
Laid out by the framers of liberty
Are defaced by segregation.
Official attempts at diversity
Can't hide the hate within.
A racial slur left on a car
A hateful damning threat.
Rich, white, old money legacy
Excludes the rest of us.
And black, or poor, or different,
Can't hope to escape scorn.
Until the high and lofty goals
That Jefferson laid out
Are met to meld communities,
We'll fight for our lost pride.
Author notes
Last month, a racial slur was scrawled on a black student's car. The student was an upstanding, important member of the student body who lived on the Lawn, a great honor for fourth-year students. The President of the University has failed to respond, and various student organizations have done so slowly.
