Answering freedom's call
Away from their families
Always standing tall
A mortar attack
A soldier lies dead
Another closed casket
A wife bows her head

For a shorter piece, this was a great write. I especially liked the way that you used rhyme with out making it seemed forced. keep up the great work and good luck in the contest!

This was a really strong poem. I like soldier poems to begin with, so this really stood out to me. This really relates to what's happening right now. I know really recently, a Canadian in the navy was killed because of a faulty sub. But, I won't rant, good poem, and good luck in the contest.

Wow. this says a lot.
it is definitely short and hard hitting. YOu have packed alot into these two small stanzas..

This is the sad song of war, isn't it? It's sad to think that with every life lost, there are few who honour them. I like this poem, it captures that element very well. Nice write. Good luck and thanks for the contest entry

Good poem, be glad I didn't write it as I would have changed "freedoms call" to freedoms fall. The last time I checked it was 1054 soldiers that had fallen in Iraq...steveV

Thanks pozo. I do hope all the soldiers ( every country ) can find a way to come home. Doesn't look like any time soon. We can only pray for them while over there.Take care pozo

wow, this is amazing. what a heartbreaking image this brings to mind - incredibly powerful and completely relevant to today's world. excellent write, and best of luck in the contest <33

Excellent
I loved this poem, Sandygram. You said some very powerful things with your images of the casket and the wife bowing her head. No matter what this war started as, the American soldiers face death every day to keep our freedom secure and those of the Iraqi people. Your images cemented that into my mind. -
Don't know about "freedom's call", Sandygram. I don't think an illegal war for the pursuit of oil, an occupation, innocent civillians being killed, abuse of prisoners, and a despot as a leader has much to do with freedom. I would have preferred this poem if it had perhaps mentioned the people this soldier killed, although I know you were limited in the number of lines allowed.

This was a tough contest to write. It is so sad what goed on in the world, life seems to go on without many people noticing. I guess I notice because my grandson B.J. is in the army. Take care, Sandy

Great
Ohhh! This is so sad, but it is totally true as well. Many of these events happen in the world, without people noticing, great message, sad story. I enjoyed reading this piece, as I always do with your pieces, it shows great sorrow, yet there is an interesting twist at the end, A wife blows her head. Great job, I loved it!
