SLEEP - Wyleian Sonnet XVII

Missing image
SLEEP – Wyleian Sonnet XVII.

Sleep grants that relaxation that our minds and bodies crave;
deliverance from the stress of daily strife.
Sometimes we dream, sometimes we simply enter Morpheus’ cave
where deep oblivion’s thoughtlessness restores our busy life.

Oft’times the boon of sleep eludes, its sweetness turning sour,
our daytime troubles magnified in mind.
Mere trifles then obsess us with the passing of each hour
and Morpheus, to our wakeful soul, remains completely blind.

Perchance, sometime we oversleep – forget to set th’alarm.
We’re late for work or miss an early meeting.
The world is quite oblivious, no-one comes to any harm,
and life continues, just the same, without our morning greeting.

If going to bed and hoping to achieve that sleepy state,
t’were best to go there early nor retire when it’s too late.

And when our days are counted, as we know they’ll surely be,
God grant us final sleep, in peace, throughout eternity.

Hugh Wyles, September 18th. 2004.

Author notes

This is a further use of Iambic Septemeter with Pentameter second lines in each stanza and concluding with a double couplet. The rhyme scheme is abab/cdcd/efef/gg/hh.
But that is for the academics only. We hope you enjoy the rhythm and rhyme of this poem in its own right.

I knew before I clicked on this poem that I would find a great write, I wasn't wrong
To have a restful sleep is a wonderful thing.
I did enjoy the rhythm, the rhymes and the thoughts in this poem, thanks!

Oh, I shouldn't be reading about sleep at this hour. I start to hear Morpheus calling, not to his cave but to his arms.

    Mari

    Hugh -
As you well know sleep is something I often find ellusive. Unfortunately it is one of the things our bodies need to keep going every day...
You have expressed it well here.
    the double couplet adds nicely.
    Your forever Gen
