Now at seventy ~
how d'you deal with envy
one of precious few?
Author notes
[pseudo-senryu]
'Coming Back To You' [Various Positions, 1984]
There are many in your life
And many still to be
Since you are a shining light
There's many that you'll see
But I have to deal with envy
When you choose the precious few
Who've left their pride on the other side of
Coming back to you

short, to the point.
i'm starting to wonder if he has found his way to AP and looked through all these cohen poems. funny that i never heard of him until his birthday came up here. -
Thanks Bruce
I have no doubt, either. One can never lose what one uses productively in accordance with the soul's purpose.

A fitting tribute to the genius. Why do I have this gut feel that the man's brain is still as sharp as a tack and full of wit and wisdom..?

thats awesome, i know that i would be deeply touched if i were him but i bet he was too. very thoughtful, sweet, and beautiful. well done.
-
Thank you kind sir!
I put it in my birthday message to him on the Leonard Cohen web site's Forum. It has a thread dedicated to fans' birthday greetings for him. Jarkko, who runs the site, said L.C. was reading the messages on the forum himself yesterday.

Finally you did it. It's nice that you turned those lyrics into a haiku. It wasn't what I expected!

A very divine tribute to Leonard Cohen.
Beautifully Penned. Namaste Blessed Be.
From fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel

Cleverly crafted!
Gennelle...how well you've weaved the lyrics and shaped them to haiku! Leonard Cohen has always been one of my favourites ever since I was a young girl - indeed he is one of the "precious few". I love how you've reflected that back to him in this poem - written with such depth and insight! Thank you for sharing this shining light!
