Thunder Hooves

~
Buffalo days were long and cold
As they roamed and lived off the land
Proud and mighty beasts they were
Yet - so humble and yet - so grand

Thunder hooves, we natives called him
A magical beast from the very start
He gave us his all - blankets and food
How did we repay? An arrow to the heart

Oh great buffalo – spirits in the sky
Forgive my forbearer's and tribes
We knew not - what we were doing to you
The horrors you faced – I cannot describe

Feed my spirit and clothe my soul
With white magic from upon your crown
Live – and be free to roam your lands
Build up your numbers – don’t let them go down

    Beautiful

Ah yes the wonderful history of our country, the indians only killed what they needed, not in excess, the ones hired by the white man noted in the first comment by Queen were the ones that nearly wiped them out. Beautiful tribute to nature and to Native Americans. Great job.

This is beautiful...The Indians only killed what they could use. They used almost every single part of the animal. And they would pray to the spirits for giving them all that they took.So the buffalo soul would be at peace. They were very spiritual with what ever animal they killed. The white man shot thousands and left them to rott on the ground. (I am really interested in learning all about the indians because I feel spiritually connected to them.I know I do not have much of their blood left in me but that is where we came from.I wish I could have known blind Grandma.I would love to learhn anything you know about our ancestors!!!! ) I love this poem! It really touched my heart!

Ah, from here came that haiku! Very well done with both of them!
I'm sure that this subject is very close to your heart, and you have written it in a very wonderful way! Nature and spiritualism are present in this poem and so are the buffalo's voice.
    Very very well done Cindy!

I love this, the buffaloe hunters that were hired in the 1800's to kill buffaloe, killed by the thousands maybe millions. The white man hired them to help wipe the indians out faster. The whole thing is sickening. Your poem is amazing I love it. Hopefully man won't repeat the same stupid mistake. Queen
