Martha's Vineyard

As soon as the snow melts and the flowers start to bloom,
Martha's Vineyard is where you'll find me.
At Woodshole, Cape Cod I'll board the ferry,
Climbing up onto the deck.

After relaxing and feeling the fresh ocean air,
I'll stand up to peer out the high railings,
straining for the first sight of the island.

The West Chop lighthouse will leep from the bay,
dragging up a cluster of big, white, rich houses.
And then, almost at once, we will be in the harbor.

The dock onto which i step is part of a maze of docks.
The dock burns my feet, but I love it.
I sprint to the water and find a spot to stand.
Shading my eyes from the sun, I await my fathers boat.

As I stand with the cool wind chilling my skin,
I can taste the ocean apon my lips.
I think of my peacful, satisfying vacation,
in Martha's Vineyard.

Author notes

Missing the summer and being in Martha's Vineyard ... I don't know about this poem, I guess I could add more. I just want it to be summer again!!!!!

I wish it was summer as well... then I could be with squiddle and bob and rich and zoe... but, as you said, life goes on. lovely poem- I first heard about Martha's Vineyard in the book "The Wanderer" by Sharon Creech, which is about an adopted girl, her 2 cousins and her 2 uncles sailing across the atlantic. Apart from the fact that it's an absolutely fantastic book, if you miss Martha's vineyard this might bring you a little closer.
