She Remembers (9/11)

She woke up that morning
with a glimmer in her eyes
She was to get married
On that sweet September day

She got up at 7am, to take in some news
before she slipped into
that beautiful white gown
to marry the man she'd always loved

Tragedy struck at 8:46am
she listened in awe
as they detailed in the news
American Flight 11 From boston
Crashed into North Tower, number one

With a second to breath
she ran to the phone
to call her fiance
Thank God someone was home

Where is he she asked
can you put him on the phone
He's gone where
Excuse me what did you say

She sat down in shock
afraid she might burst
her fiance ran to work
to grab his suit he'd left the day before

At 9:03am is when American Flight 175 from Boston
crashed into the South Tower, number two
But the horror wasnt over
it had only just begun

She watches it on the News
Live, as the plane tears through tower number two
That is when the call came
from the man she'd always loved
he said that he loved her
and for her not to worry

There was panic in the halls
she could hear it in his voice
when he said "Baby, never forget how we always loved"
She asked him what has happening

But he did not respond
"Hunny I need to go,
whatever happens, know I have always loved you"
She took a deep breath as the tears streamed down her face

This was not happening
how could this be true
Flights are grounded
Airports are closed

9:45am American Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon
10:05 The South Tower Collapses
She watched on in terror
as her phone rang, she hurried to answer

Her fiance was on the other side
out of breath with fright in his voice
"I'm not going to make it hunny, I love you"
as the line went dead

10:05 The White House is evacuated
10:10am, a large part of the Pentagon collapses
at the same time United Flight 39 crashes in a wooded area
in Pennsylvania, rumor has it, passagners confronted hijackers

10:28 The north Tower collapses
As the news coverage continues
Her body gets weak, her heart fails to beat
for one moment
her life, demolished

As the world continued to spin out of control
Two weeks after his death
She found out she was two months pregnant
Eight weeks later, she found out
She was having the boy he'd always wanted

Author notes

On April 4th, 2002 Mitchell Rae was born, 7 pounds 3 ounces, 19 inches long, resembling his daddy, the man his Mother always loved.

There is hope, in our children. There was a wave of babies born, to lost fathers in the September 11th attacks, although the loss is great, the heart is broken, these little bundles of joy, remind us that there is good in the world, there is love and kindess, and we have a piece of our lost men in their babies eyes.

With love and compassion I write this. My heart too is broken for thos who lost loved ones on September 11th and in the "War on Terrorism". An event meant to break One Country apart, brought together a Nation.

We will never forget.

No matter how much time passes, I will never forget the images of that day, and I will always weep for those that were lost. May the children of the lost parents grow to be strong individuals, and may they always carry love for others in their hearts. This was truly beautiful. thank you for writing this. i needed a good cry today.

It was so compassionate of you to write such a moving piece, Criss. I remember watching the "Children of September 11th" special on Primetime on the first anniversary of this terrifying tragedy, and saw about 30 new people who will have to grow up without the fathers that sired them. The babies were all so beautiful, but I wept for them as I could never imagine having to live without ever getting to know my daddy.

And my heart breaks for the mothers who bore those children.

The hope that arises from that day lives on in the souls of the kids, but the anguish shall always be there as well because one half of them is gone.

May America--and the rest of the world--never forget.

    Many blessings,

    Raven Aurora

everytime I read anything about the events that took place on that day, my body shivers because I can still see the images. I cried so much that day and for days after for the amount of heartbreak and loss the US was experiencing...It is truly one of those things I don't know how anyone...ever...could forget

    Bloody hell Criss

If this isn't a hard hitting poem I will never know what one is. Such sadness in it though, even if it does end with hope, it still breaks my heart.

    I applaud you for this
